Career
Club career
youth
Born in Burgos, Mata grew up in Oviedo . At the age of twelve he began his football career in the youth department of Real Oviedo , where his father also played for most of his career.
real Madrid
In the summer of 2003 the then 15-year-old Mata moved to Real Madrid's youth department . After he went through the youth teams Cadete A and then Juvenil C , he came to Juvenil A , the A youth of Real Madrid , for the 2005/06 season . With the team he won the championship and the Copa de Campeones de Liga Juvenil in the 2005/06 season . This was followed by promotion to Real Madrid's second professional team, Real Madrid Castilla after the season. Although he was the second top scorer of his team behind Álvaro Negredo with ten league goals in the 2006/07 season , he was relegated to the third Spanish division with Real Madrid Castilla .
Valencia CF
For the 2007/08 season Mata signed with the Spanish first division club Valencia CF , for which he made his debut on the second league matchday against UD Almería . Mata benefited in his first season from the suspension of the player Miguel Ángel Angulo , which opened a place for him in the starting XI of Valencia CF. At the end of the season he found himself in the starting line-up and played a total of 24 league games this season, in which he scored five times. In addition, he scored twice as a goal scorer in the 3-2 home win in the Copa del Rey against FC Barcelona and thus played a major role in reaching the cup final. In the said final against Getafe FC , he scored the opening goal in his team's 3-1 victory.
In the 2008/09 season he helped Valencia CF get their best start in the club's history. Up until matchday eight, Valencia was ahead of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona at the top of the table. Only at the end did the team weaken a little and land in sixth place at the end of the season. He only missed a single league game during the season and was behind David Villa is the club's second best goalscorer with eleven goals.
For the 2009/10 season, Mata received the number 10 jersey after Angulo left the club. His sustained good performance, nine goals in 35 league games in the 2009/10 season , then generated increased interest from the Spanish top club FC Barcelona .
Chelsea FC
For the 2011/12 season Mata moved to Chelsea . He signed a five-year contract with the London club.
Mata made his debut on August 27, 2011 against Norwich City . Here he came on in the 68th minute for Florent Malouda and scored the 3-1 final score. He made his Champions League debut on September 14 in a 2-0 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen . During the season, Mata, who was able to assert himself as a regular player, shone as a preparer and at the end of the season was able to record 13 assists and six goals in 34 games . In his first season he won the FA Cup with a 2-1 win over Liverpool FC and Champions League winner with a 5-4 win on penalties against Bayern Munich , where he was the only player at Chelsea couldn't convert his penalty. However, in the 88th minute he gave a corner kick for the 1: 1 equalizer by Didier Drogba, who saved Chelsea in extra time. At the end of the season, Mata was voted Chelsea Player of the Year .
On May 15, 2013 he defeated his club Benfica Lisbon by a 2-1 in the final and won the Europa League . He and his compatriot and former teammate Fernando Torres are the first players to be world champions, European champions, Champions League winners and Europa League winners at the same time. Mata was also named Chelsea Player of the Year after this season.
Manchester United
After Mata was mostly only the second choice in the first half of the 2013/14 season under the new coach José Mourinho at Chelsea, he moved to league rivals Manchester United on January 25, 2014 . The transfer fee was 37.1 million pounds sterling (around 44.7 million euros ), making Mata the most expensive new addition in the club's history until Ángel Di María was signed (in August 2014 for 75 million euros).
In June 2019, Mata extended his contract with the Red Devils early until 2021.
National team career
Mata also has a large number of appearances and goals in the Spanish youth national teams. With Spain's U-19 he won the U-19 European Football Championship in 2006 . He scored three goals in the first group game in a 5-3 win against Turkey. He was also used in the following games of the tournament and increased his hit account to a total of four goals with his hit in the semifinals in a 5-0 win against Austria. This made him the second top scorer in the European Championship with one goal less than teammate Alberto Bueno .
On March 28, 2009 he played for the first time for the Spanish national team in the 1-0 victory in the World Cup qualifier at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium against Turkey .
In 2009 he finished third with Spain in the Confederations Cup , where he played in the first two group matches. Less than three months later, Mata scored his first international goal in the 2010 World Cup qualifier against Estonia . Mata also scored one goal in each of the two final qualifiers.
In 2011 Mata won the European Championship with Spain's U-21s . He himself contributed two hits in five games.

Two minutes after coming on, he scored the goal to make it 4-0 and thus helped Spain become the first team to defend the European Championship.
