Odion Jude Ighalo (born June 16, 1989 in Lagos ) is a Nigerian football player who has been under contract with Manchester United as a loan player since 2020 . He is also in the squad of the Nigerian national soccer team .

Career

Udinese Calcio and Granada CF.

Odion Ighalo moved from his Nigerian homeland to the Norwegian first division club Lyn Oslo in 2007 at the age of 18 and made his debut in the Tippeligaen 2007 in September 2007 . In a year and a half in Norway he scored nine goals in twenty league games before he was signed on July 30, 2008 by the Italian first division club Udinese Calcio . In the Serie A 2008/09 , the young attacker played five league games and scored one goal. In the summer of 2009 Ighalo was loaned to the Spanish third division club Granada CF, in which the owner of Udinese Calcio Giampaolo Pozzo had previously acquired the majority stake. Thanks to his sixteen league goals, the club managed to move up to the second division. He spent the 2010/11 season on loan with the Italian first division club AC Cesena and again with FC Granda. With Granada succeeded in the play-offs of the Segunda División 2010/11, promotion to the first division. As a result of the cooperation with Udinese Calcio, he played the following three seasons for the team from Andalusia in the Primera División and was used there regularly.

Watford FC

On July 29, 2014 Ighalo was signed on loan from English second division club Watford FC . The Watford club was also bought by Italian entrepreneur Giampaolo Pozzo in the summer of 2012, who subsequently regularly moved players between the three clubs he owned. On October 24, 2014 Watford signed the attacker on a firm contract basis after scoring three goals in eight league games. Ighalo scored four goals in the 7-2 home win over Blackpool FC on January 24, 2015. In total, the Nigerian scored twenty league goals in the Football League Championship 2014/15 and secured promotion to the Premier League with his team as runner-up .

Nigerian national team

After his convincing performance for Watford FC, Odion Ighalo was appointed to the squad of the Nigerian national football team for the first time in 2015. On March 29, 2015, he played his first international match in a 1-1 draw against South Africa. He was part of the Nigerian squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Nigeria was eliminated as third in Group D in the group stage. Ighalo played in the defeat against Croatia from the start and was substituted on for Kelechi Iheanacho in the defeat against Argentina and the win against Iceland .

At the Africa Cup of 2019 , the Nigerian national team took 3rd place (victory in the game for 3rd place against Tunisia); Ighalo was the tournament's top scorer with five goals.
