Philip Anthony "Phil" Jones (born February 21, 1992 in Preston ) is an English football player who is currently under contract with Manchester United . He is a trained central defender , but can also be used as a right full-back or in central and defensive midfield . Phil Jones was considered one of the greatest talents in English football and as the successor to Rio Ferdinand both at club level and in the English national team .
Career
Blackburn Rovers
Jones joined the Blackburn Rovers youth team in 2002 . After sitting on the bench in a Carling Cup game, he was awarded a professional contract in 2009. In the same month he made his debut for the Rovers in the Carling Cup, but the first Premier League appearance was still six months away. In the 1-1 draw against Chelsea on March 21, 2010, he was finally in the starting line-up after some Rovers players, including his direct rival Gaël Givet , had failed. Jones convinced with a good performance and was used in all remaining games of the season.
Also in the following season he was a regular with the Rovers until he sustained a cartilage damage in his knee in the game against West Ham United on Matchday 18. Due to the injury, he was suspended for four months. He made his comeback on March 19 when he was substituted on for the game against Blackpool FC . In the next game against Arsenal , he was back in the starting line-up. By the end of the season he was used in all other Premier League games. Jones played a strong season and attracted several top clubs.
Manchester United
For the 2011/12 season, Jones, who had signed a new contract with Blackburn Rovers in February, moved to Manchester United . The transfer fee is said to have been between 16.5 and 20.5 million pounds sterling . According to the Blackburn Rovers, Jones was the most expensive sale in the club's history.
Jones made his first appearance for Manchester United in the FA Community Shield game when he came on for Rio Ferdinand in the second half . In the Premier League he was also substituted on for Ferdinand, who was injured, on the first day of the match. From the injuries of Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidićs , which were considered first choice in central defense before the season, Jones benefited and played regularly in the Premier League. He was also used in all six Champions League games and three Europa League matches. However, he was not mainly used in his main position in central defense, where Jonny Evans was another alternative. In October 2011, he was used against Liverpool for the first time since moving to Manchester in midfield . There and as a right full-back , he was able to convince, so that he was no longer used in central defense from January.
English national team
Jones was a member of England's U-19 and U-21 national teams. With the U-21 he took part in the U-21 European Championship 2011 in Denmark. There he retired with his team trained by Stuart Pearce in the preliminary round. But Jones himself delivered a good performance and was then by Fabio Capello for a friendly game in the cadre of senior national appeal. The game against the Netherlands was canceled, however, so that he came to his first international appearance on October 7th. Jones was in the English squad for the European Football Championship 2012 , but was not used.
