Nemanja Vidić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Немања Видић ; born October 21, 1981 in Titovo Užice , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Serbian football player . Nemanja Vidić has long been considered one of the best defensive players in the world due to his headball and tackle strength. His most successful time was between 2006 and 2014 at Manchester United . There Vidić u. a. five times English champion as well as Champions League winner and club world champion .
Club career
Red Star Belgrade
Nemanja Vidić moved in his youth from Sloboda Užice to the youth department of the top Serbian club Red Star Belgrade , where he spent four years. He made his professional debut in 2000. With Red Star he won both the championship and the Serbian Cup in 2002 and 2004.
Spartak Moscow
From 2004 he played for the Russian club Spartak Moscow , where he quickly developed into a regular player. In December 2005, Manchester United signed the center-back for a transfer fee of seven million pounds.
Manchester United
Together with Rio Ferdinand in central defense, Manchester conceded just 22 goals in 38 games in the 2007/08 season . Vidić was voted PFA Premier League Team of the Year in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011 . On November 8, 2007, Manchester extended his contract until 2012. In 2008 he won the UEFA Champions League in addition to the championship with Manchester .
In February 2009 Vidić was voted Footballer of the Month (January) in the Premier League. Vidić was nominated as the best player in the Premier League in April alongside Ryan Giggs , Cristiano Ronaldo , Edwin van der Sar , Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard , with Vidić being the favorite. However, it won Ryan Giggs. On December 21, in Zurich, FIFA named Vidić and John Terry from Chelsea FC as the best central defenders in Europe for the 2009 season. In 2011, he received this honor again together with Gerard Piqué from FC Barcelona .
At the beginning of the 2010/11 season Nemanja Vidić was determined by coach Sir Alex Ferguson as the new captain of Manchester, as Gary Neville hardly played any more and was mostly replaced by John O'Shea or Rafael . At the end of the season, the defender was voted best player of the season by the Premier League sponsors for the second time since 2009.
On December 7, 2011 Vidić suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in his right knee in the last Champions League group game at FC Basel (1: 2) . He was thus out for the entire remainder of the 2011/12 season.
On January 11, 2014, Nemanja Vidic made his 200th Premier League game for Manchester United in a 2-0 win over Swansea City . Shortly afterwards, on February 7, 2014, Vidić announced that he would not extend his contract, which was due to expire at the end of the 2013/14 season, in order to “take on a new challenge”.
Inter Milan
In March 2014, Vidić signed a contract with Inter Milan for the following season. Vidić terminated his contract on January 18, 2016. He announced the end of his career eleven days later.
National team
In 2006 he took part in the World Cup with the Serbian-Montenegrin national team, but was not used due to an injury. On October 10, 2009, he qualified with the Serbian national team as group first before France for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. After the resignation of Savo Milošević , he was the second captain of the national team. As a result of the missed qualification for the European Championship 2012 , Vidić resigned from the national team.
Others
Since July 17, 2006, Vidić has been married to Ana Ivanović from Serbia, a business student. He is the father of three sons.
