Youth in the province of Noord-Brabant
Virgil van Dijk, the son of a Surinamese mother and a Dutch father, started playing football at WDS'19 in the north of his native Breda in 1997 before moving to Willem II Tilburg after four years , around 30 kilometers east of Breda.
FC Groningen
On May 1, 2011, he played for the first time in professional football , now wearing the FC Groningen jersey , when he was used in the 4-2 away win against ADO Den Haag . The Groninger qualified for the play-offs for participation in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League . In the first round, FC Groningen prevailed against Heracles Almelo and again met ADO Den Haag in the second round. After a 1: 5 in The Hague , Virgil van Dijk scored two goals in the second leg in Groningen to a successful comeback, which resulted in the equalization of the first leg result; FC Groningen prevailed on penalties. On October 30, 2011 Virgil van Dijk scored his first goal in the Eredivisie in a 6-0 home win against Feyenoord Rotterdam . During the 2011/12 season he showed strong performances, but in April he was diagnosed with advanced peritonitis and kidney poisoning, which the medical staff of FC Groningen and the University Hospital of Groningen did not recognize. In terms of sport, the Groninger's season was disappointing when they managed to stay in the league with 14th place in the table six points ahead of 16th place.
In summer 2012 he returned to the team. Van Dijk and Kees Kwakman formed the central defender duo of FC Groningen, who qualified for the play-offs for participation in the second qualifying round for the Europa League , but were eliminated in the first round against FC Twente .
Celtic Glasgow
After three years at FCG, van Dijk moved to Celtic Glasgow in Scotland in June 2013 . He signed a four-year contract after being bought out of his contract with Groningen. With Celtic van Dijk won the Scottish championship in the first year of membership. The following season he won with the team the small double with the championship title and the league cup.
Southampton FC

Liverpool FC
On January 1, 2018, van Dijk moved to Liverpool FC. According to Southampton FC, Liverpool FC paid the highest transfer fee to date for a defender with an estimated £ 75 million (around 84.5 million euros at the time), making Van Dijk one of the most expensive players in football history to date .
