The Merseyside Derby is the name of the football derby that is played between Everton FC and Liverpool FC , two successful English football clubs. The derby got its name because of the home of both clubs in the county of Merseyside .

The game is often referred to as the "Friendly Derby", as many families in Liverpool have both "blue" and "red" fans; neither of the two clubs has a specific catchment area in the city or determines its supporters through a religious or political attitude, as for example at the Old Firm in Glasgow.

History and results

To date (as of January 5, 2020) 235 Merseyside Derbies have been played. Liverpool won 95 games, Everton had 66 wins and 74 games ended in a draw.

Team change

Due to the rivalry between the two teams, it rarely happens that players "overflow" from one team to the derby opponent. In the course of time, however, the following club changes occurred:

From Everton to Liverpool

From Liverpool to Everton

Major games

The first meeting of the two teams at Wembley Stadium on the occasion of the League Cup Finals in 1984 ended in a draw, but Liverpool won the replay.

In the same year, the clubs met again on the occasion of the FA Charity Shield at Wembley Stadium. This time Everton won through an own goal by Bruce Grobbelaar .

An FA Cup game in 1991 ended 4-4. In this encounter, Everton managed to make up a deficit four times. To this day, this game is considered to be one of the most exciting Merseyside derbies ever. Everton later won the replay, after which Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish resigned.
