Darren Michael Potter (born December 21, 1984 in Liverpool ) is an Irish football player . The central midfielder was in his hometown both in the youth team of Everton FC and the FC Liverpool active, but could the latter club in the professional division not ultimately prevail. The former Irish international is currently active for third division club Rotherham United .
Athletic career
Potter was already active at a young age in the youth departments of three renowned English football clubs. He started at Everton and returned via the Blackburn Rovers to his hometown at the age of 15, where he was trained at the Liverpool Academy. In the professional team of Liverpool FC, he was mostly outside the Premier League for the course. He made his debut on August 10, 2004 in the Champions League qualification against the Grazer AK as a substitute in the 85th minute for Steve Finnan - the game ended with a 2-0 away win - and was over the full in the second leg against the Austrians Play time on the field. In the team that ultimately won the “European crown”, he made a 5-minute short appearance in the first leg of the last 16 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen . After Potter came to his first (and only) Premier League appearances for Liverpool on February 1, 2005 against Charlton Athletic and on April 23, 2005 against Crystal Palace , he stayed in the squad for the Champions League final against AC Milan not included. In the following season 2005/06 he was primarily active in the early phase of the Champions League and was henceforth loaned to second division clubs.
From January 2006 he first played for Southampton FC and after his return at the end of the 2005/06 season he moved directly to Wolverhampton to join the Wolves playing there . He was in good shape here, which prompted the Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign Potter on a permanent basis in January 2007 for £ 250,000 and provide him with a 3½ year contract. The 2007/08 season brought serious setbacks, however, and coach Mick McCarthy gave Potter the opportunity to move until the end of January 2008. However, the player, who had been signed only a year earlier, refused and stayed in Wolverhampton until the end of the season before joining was finally put on the transfer list with mutual consent. Since no buyer was found in the summer of 2008, he was given the opportunity to fight back for a place in the team. However, without receiving more minutes, he moved on loan to Sheffield Wednesday in January 2009 , where he managed a long-range goal against Charlton Athletic (4-1) on his first mission after 16 minutes .
On July 10, 2009, he signed a new contract with the Owls in Sheffield, with the parties involved agreeing to keep the transfer fee confidential.
Irish national team
After Potter had already been in various Irish youth teams and also in 2003 in the squad for the Junior World Cup in the United Arab Emirates , he came on May 23, 2007 against Ecuador in the New York Giants Stadium for his first international match for the Irish senior team .
