Stephen "Steve" John Finnan (born April 24, 1976 in Limerick , Ireland ) is a former Irish football player .

Career

Steve Finnan started his career at Welling United . About Birmingham City and Notts County led his way to Fulham FC , with whom he rose to the Premier League in 2001. After two successful years, crowned by winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2003, he moved to the English record champions in Liverpool for a transfer fee of five million euros.

In his first season he was stopped by numerous injuries. In his second year, however, he achieved his greatest triumph to date. The final in the Carling Cup was lost to Chelsea , but the Champions League final won, even though Finnan had to be substituted at half time due to an injury. In the same year, the title in the European Supercup followed . In 2006 he became the FA Cup winner.

On September 1, 2008 Finnan signed a 2-year contract with Spanish first division club Espanyol Barcelona . After he came to only four appearances for Espanyol in a first year, the contract was dissolved at the end of the season by mutual agreement and Finnan joined Portsmouth FC for a year .

National team

Finnan had some experience in the Irish U21 team before making his senior international debut against Greece in 2000 . At the 2002 World Cup he was a regular for the Irish national team .
