Baie Sainte Anne is one of the 25 administrative districts of the Seychelles and one of two on the island of Praslin . With 25 square kilometers, it is one of the largest districts in the country in terms of area. With 3922 inhabitants, Baie Sainte Anne ranks third in the Seychelles counties. The islands of Curieuse , Round, Chauve Souris and St. Pierre, as well as the 27.3 hectare Eve Island created by land reclamation , also belong to the district. The main towns are the port of Baie Sainte Anne and the tourist town and district administrative seat of Anse Volbert .

History and naming

On November 20, 1768, the French lieutenant Lampériaire took the island, henceforth called Praslin, into the possession of the French crown. At what is now called Anse Possession , a stone was set to document the occupation. On this Sunday morning, the French flag flew over Praslin for the first time on a 15-meter-high mast.

The district was named after the patron saint of the first Catholic church on the island, Saint Anne , Baie Sainte Anne (Bay of Saint Anne), a natural harbor in the east of Praslin Island. The settlement called Baie Sainte Anne developed here . Both the district and the settlement will be Baie Ste. Anne or just abbreviated BSA .

Economy and Infrastructure

The most important economic factor in the district is tourism, which is mainly concentrated on Anse Volbert , a three-kilometer stretch of beach. In the settlement of Baie Sainte Anne is the island hospital as well as the port where cargo ships and fast ferries operate from Praslin to Mahé and La Digue.

Attractions

Anse Volbert, Hauptstrasse

With the jungle Vallée de Mai , one of two world natural heritage sites in the Seychelles, the district has a first-rate tourist attraction, which it shares with the other island district of Grand Anse . The Anse Volbert is a popular travel destination. The largest hotels in Praslin are located here. The Anse Lazio (Chevalier Bay) is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The island of Curieuse is a popular destination because of the Aldabra giant tortoises that live there and the ruins of a leper colony . A popular diving and snorkeling area is around the island of St. Pierre, although coral bleaching has reduced biodiversity.
