Curieuse is an island in the Seychelles and, like all granite islands, is part of the inner Seychelles around the main island of Mahé . It is only about one kilometer from Praslin . It is the fifth largest in the inner Seychelles.
Curieuse is three square kilometers, has no infrastructure to speak of and is therefore only inhabited by a few people. Previously, it was because of their red soil as Ile Rouge called and served in the 19th century as Aussätzigenlager for leprosy -Kranke.
Today Curieuse houses a small research station for turtles and other typical Seychelles flora and fauna such as mangrove forests and Seychelles giant tortoises .
Curieuse and the Curieuse Baie south to form the National Park Curieuse Marine National Park .
Besides Praslin, Curieuse is the only island on which the Seychelles palm Coco de Mer is endemic. Since the water between the two islands is sometimes very shallow - there are “connecting points” that are consistently only a few meters deep (<10 m water depth) - it is reasonable to assume that Curieuse was once a part of Praslin.
The island is regularly visited by day tourists.
