Port Glaud is one of the 25 administrative districts of the Seychelles . With 25 square kilometers, it is the largest district on the island of Mahé .
geography
Large parts of the district are occupied by the highest mountain in the Seychelles, the 905 meter high Morne Seychellois , and its foothills. These wooded areas are part of a national park and are largely uninhabited. On the coast, opposite the island of Thérèse, is the small town of Port Glaud. The last mangrove forests of Mahé are in the northwest of the district . The beaches of Port Launay and Baie Ternay are part of the district, as are the islands of Conception (0.603 km²), Thérèse (0.72 km²), L'Islette and Île aux Vaches Marines (each with an area of 5 to 6 hectares).
Naming and history
About 1775 captain Glaud is mentioned, who settled at the place of the present day Port Glaud. He made his living selling turtles, which were popular on ships at the time. Within a few years Glaud had caught and exterminated almost all turtles.
Today's Berjaya Mahé Beach Hotel is one of the first large hotels to be built in the Seychelles and was considered the best hotel in the country until the mid-1990s. The independence of the Seychelles was celebrated here with a ball in 1976. In 1981 a camp of the National Youth Service was set up in Port Launay , which played a special role in the educational offensive of the socialist revolution in the Seychelles. The camp has since been closed. The construction of a hotel complex has started here since 2008, which was the largest luxury resort in the Indian Ocean when it opened on February 1, 2010. The hotel complex is 120 hectares, offers 224 suites and 43 villas, the largest of which is 980 m². The hotel has two beaches, 56 pools, and five restaurants.
Attractions
The beaches of Port Launay and Baie Ternay are among the most beautiful beaches in the north of Mahé. The bays are under nature protection and form the marine national parks of the same name . Together with the islands of Thérèse and Conception , they are popular diving areas . A popular destination is the Sauzier waterfall , which is the symbol of the district and is shown on the coat of arms of Port Glaud.
