Districts of the Seychelles

Outline of the Seychelles

The Seychelles are divided into 25 districts, all of which are in the Inner Islands area. Of these, 22 are mainly or exclusively on the main island of Mahé, two on Praslin, while La Digue forms a further district with minor islands and some more distant islands (including Silhouette , North Island , Frégate , Bird Island and Denis Island ). The Outer Islands ( Zil Elwannyen Sesel ), which with 211.3 km² make up 46.4% of the Seychelles in terms of area, are not assigned to any administrative district.

The original 23 districts were by the Local Government Act created in 1991 as a local self-government units with elected chairperson ( chairpersons ) and councils ( councilors ). At the same time, they served as electoral districts . Each constituency sends one representative to the People's Assembly ( People's Assembly ). In addition, the districts form the spatial reference units for regional statistics . These 23 districts largely corresponded to the 23 constituencies that were formed for the 1979 parliamentary election.

In 1993 the district councils were abolished. Since then, the districts have been governed by administrators appointed by the central government. On a more recent information page from the government of the Seychelles there is again talk of local district councils ( District Community Councils ).

In 1998, two new districts, Roche Caiman and Les Mamelles (not to be confused with Mamelles Island ) were created, largely from virgin land and parts of the Plaisance district .

The capital Victoria is formed from parts of the districts of English River , Saint Louis and Mont Fleuri .

Historic districts

The original district structure in the colonial era only knew four districts:

  1. North Mahé
  2. South Mahé
  3. Central Mahé
  4. Praslin

As early as 1949, Praslin received its own island council for local self-government, but currently consists of two districts.
