Marek Rodák (born December 13, 1996 in Košice ) is a Slovak football goalkeeper who is under contract with the English second division club FC Fulham . He is a former Slovak junior international.

Career

society

Marek Rodák was born in Košice . His father of the same name, Marek, was already a football goalkeeper and so he began to play in goal in the youth of MFK Košice . He was discovered there as a teenager and in September 2012 he completed a trial training session at Fulham FC for the first time . For the next 2013/14 season he joined the Cottagers at the age of 16 , where he was assigned to the U18 team. This season he also played for the U23 Premier League for the first time. In his second appearance against the U23 from Aston Villa , he scored the 5: 3 winning goal in the 85th minute with a wide tee shot. In the following season 2014/15 he was regularly for the U23 between the posts and moved on January 8, 2015 for two months to sixth division FC Farnborough , where he played five league games. Then he played the season with the U23 to the end.

He kept this status as the reserve goalkeeper in the following season. On November 25, 2015, he signed a new three-year contract with the Londoners . On January 15, 2016, he moved to the relegation - threatened fifth division Welling United for the remainder of the 2015/16 season . He made his debut eight days later (30th matchday) in the 1: 2 home defeat against AFC Barrow . He quickly established himself as a regular with the Wings . Welling won only one of the 17 league games in which Rodák guarded the gate and had to accept relegation to the sixth-rate National League South as bottom of the table.

In the following season 2016/17 Rodák had to give way more and more to the younger Magnus Norman as well as Marcus Bettinelli and Jesse Joronen at Fulhams U23 and only made six league appearances by the turn of the year. On January 13, 2017, he moved to fourth division Accrington Stanley on loan until the end of the 2016/17 season . The next day (26th matchday) he made his debut in the 3-0 away defeat against Cheltenham Town in a professional division of the English Football League . From head coach John Coleman he was used in the sequence and left Accy at the end of the season after 20 league appearances.

After he still had no chance of playing in the first team at Fulham FC, he moved to third division Rotherham United on August 30, 2017 for the entire 2017/18 season . On September 9, 2017 (6th matchday), he made his debut in a 3-2 home win against FC Bury in the Millers' jersey . He also quickly prevailed as a regular goalkeeper in League One and reached the promotion play-offs with Rotherham as fourth in the table. In the semifinals they defeated Scunthorpe United in two games and in the final at Wembley they defeated Shrewsbury Town 2-1 after extra time. In total, he completed 38 league games this season. On July 25, 2018, Rodák moved again to Rotherham United on loan for a year. In this 2018/19 season he played 45 league games, but had to accept relegation with the club.

For the next 2019/20 season , Rodák returned to Fulham, where he took the bench behind number one Marcus Bettinelli after a few loans. He made his debut for the Cottagers on August 27, 2019 in a 1-0 home loss to Southampton FC . On October 23, 2019 (13th matchday), he replaced the previously criticized Bettinelli in the league for the first time when he was in the starting lineup in the 3-2 home win over Luton Town . Three days later he started again in the 0-0 draw against Middlesbrough FC , but after a handball outside the sixteenth he flew off the field after 17 minutes. Despite this setback, he ran Bettinelli from the rank of regular goalkeeper. He was regularly praised for his achievements in his first league games. On May 15, 2020, he signed a new four-year contract.

National team

Between August 2014 and March 2015, Marek Rodák played eight international matches for the Slovak U19 national team . In September 2015, at the age of 18, he played for the U21 for the first time , but was only substitute goalkeeper behind Adrián Chovan for over two years . In September 2017 he rose to number one. On September 11, 2018, he headed the goal for the 3-2 victory in the 94th minute of the game in the qualifying game for the 2019 European Under-21 Championship against Iceland . By October 2018, he was used in 14 international matches for the U21s.
