Thomas "Tom" Cairney (born January 20, 1991 in Nottingham ) is an English - Scottish football player . After playing for Hull City for four years , he moved to Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2013, initially on loan and six months later , where he made his breakthrough in the second-highest English division . The midfielder has been under contract with the Premier League promoted FC Fulham since the 2015/16 season . Cairney made his debut for the Scottish national team in March 2017 , having previously expired for the country's U19 and U21 teams .
Club career
Hull City
Cairney was born and raised in Nottingham . His Scottish father often took the young Thomas home to see Celtic Glasgow games . Cairney started playing football at Leeds United at the age of seven . There he played in various youth teams until he was dismissed from the team in 2007 because the coaches felt he was too small. He then completed a trial training at Hull City , during which he was able to convince those responsible. Cairney then signed a youth contract with Hull, where he initially played in the U-18 and thanks to his strong performances in the 2008/09 season was named Hull's Young Player of the Season.
For the 2009/10 season he was promoted to the first team. For the Tigers , he played his first competitive game in the League Cup on August 25, 2009 against Southend United. In the 3-1 home win, he was able to take the lead in the 7th minute. In the Premier League , however, Cairney made his debut on January 30, 2010 in a 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers . On March 5, 2010, he scored his first league goal in the 5-1 defeat against Everton . On March 31st, Cairney signed a new three-year contract with Hull City. In his first season in professional football, Cairney came to eleven league appearances in which he managed a goal. The 2009/10 season was bad for his club and they had to relegate to the Football League Championship .
In the 2010/11 season in the second-rate championship, Cairney recommended more and more often for the starting lineup of the Tigers . In January 2011 he signed a new contract, which should keep him with Hull until the summer of 2013. Due to an injury, however, he only came to 22 missions in which he was able to score one hit and prepare four. In the following season, Cairney fell out of the starting line-up due to a foot injury and ultimately made 27 appearances in the league and four assists.
The 2012/13 season got off to a very unfortunate start for Cairney. In a strong cup game against Doncaster Rovers , in which he was able to prepare two goals for Hulls in the opening phase to make it 2-0, he suffered a serious knee injury when Doncaster's James Husband was ruthlessly tackled . This injury condemned Cairney to watch for three months. It was not until December 8, 2012 in the game against Watford FC he was part of the Hull squad again, but was not used. It wasn't until the following day that Cairney made his comeback when he came on as a substitute in a 2-0 home win against Huddersfield Town . He found himself on the bench frequently in the rest of the season and was only used sporadically. In the league he only made ten short appearances, but in two FA Cup games he was on the field for the entire season, scored one goal and was able to prepare one. His teammates had a strong season, however, and Hull returned to the Premier League after a two-year absence.
Blackburn Rovers
On August 1, 2013 Tom Cairney was loaned to the Premier League relegated Blackburn Rovers for the remainder of the 2013/14 season . At Blackburn he was able to celebrate his breakthrough this season. In his second outing, on August 7th in the cup defeat by Carlisle United, he scored one goal and was able to prepare another. His first league goal in the Rovers jersey came on August 24th in the home game against FC Barnsley , which was won 5-2. On January 2, 2014, the now undisputed regular player was signed by the Blackburn Rovers. After strong performances in the spring, he was out for the whole of March due to an ankle injury. On his return on April 1, 2014 in a 3-3 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion , he scored one goal and set up another. After a brief injury at the end of the season, Cairney scored one goal each against Charlton Athletic and Wigan Athletic in their last two games . In his first season at Blackburn, he was able to score six goals and prepare nine in 40 appearances. For his strong performance he was rewarded by the fans with the election of Blackburn's Player of the Year 2013/14.
The 2014/15 season got off to a great start for Cairney. Already in the first league game against Cardiff City he was able to score a goal. In the following six games there was one goal and three assists. In the August Championship Player of the Month election, he was only beaten by Charlton's Igor Vetokele . On November 29, against Leeds United , Cairney was sent off for a yellow-red card. Shortly thereafter, he suffered an ankle injury that caused him to miss three games. After that, Cairney moved back into the starting line-up, but struggled to score goals. It was not until April 4, 2015 that he was able to overcome his eight-month drought when he scored in a 3-3 draw against Leeds United. In 45 missions he was able to score three goals and prepare seven more. His goal against Norwich City was named Blackburn's Goal of the Year. During his time in the Blackburn Rovers jersey, he was considered a fan favorite.
Fulham FC
On June 26, 2015 Tom Cairney moved to league rivals Fulham FC . He signed a four-year contract with the club from the English capital, London , and was given the number 10. With his new club, he made his debut on the first day of the 2015/16 season . In the 1-1 draw against Cardiff City , Cairney stood for the full 90 minutes. On his debut at Craven Cottage the following weekend in the 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion , he was able to score his first goal for Fulham. He also scored in the games against Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday . Cairney experienced its low point of the season on September 29, 2015 in the 3-0 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers. There he was sent into the shower by referee Darren Drysdale with a straight red after 35 minutes played after he committed a tough foul against opponent Adam Le Fondre , for which he was then suspended for three games. In the middle of the season Fulham got into the relegation battle because in three months only a single game could be won. Cairney helped his team through strong performances. On February 13, 2016, he scored a goal in the 3-1 away win against Queens Park Rangers and was able to prepare one. A week later he scored twice in a 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic and once three days later in a 1-1 draw with Leeds United . Due to his strong performances, Cairney was nominated for the Championship Player of the Month February award. Fulham finished the season in 20th place and held the class. Cairney scored six goals in 39 league games and was able to hang up six. In the choice of Fulham's Player of the Season, he finished second behind Ross McCormack . Cairney also became a favorite with the Fulham fans, which they expressed with chants like "Ain't nobody like Tom Cairney".
In the first league game of the 2016/17 season against Newcastle United , Cairney replaced Scott Parker as captain and was able to prepare the winning goal for Matt Smith . The first month started strong again for him. He scored two goals against Leeds United and his ex-club Blackburn Rovers and was named the Man of the Match in both games . From November 29, 2016, Cairney led his team onto the pitch as captain in every game. This season he experienced a significant increase in performance compared to the previous season. Therefore, he was associated with the Premier League clubs Middlesbrough FC , Aston Villa and Newcastle United in the 2017 winter transfer window , but Fulham FC publicly stated that Tom Cairney is not for sale. After scoring two goals in January, February became Cairney's strongest month, just like the preseason. After two assists in wins against Burton Albion and Wigan Athletic , he was able to score against Nottingham Forest himself. On February 22, in the away win against Bristol City , he netted again and put on a hit. Against Cardiff City he got two more assists. Those two goals and five assists earned him a February Championship Player of the Month nomination. During the rest of the season he scored another five goals and assisted in another. Fulham finished the league in 6th place and was able to qualify for the promotion playoffs. In the first leg against Reading FC Cairney equalized the 1-1 final score. The second leg in Readings Madejski Stadium , however, lost 1-0 and had to bury their hopes for promotion. This season he scored 13 times in 51 appearances and contributed twelve assists. Cairney, he was voted Fulham's Player of the Year this time. He was also nominated for EFL Championship Player of the Year and was part of Team of the Year, along with teammate Ryan Sessegnon .
For the 2017/18 season, Cairney extended his contract with Fulham until 2021 and was appointed the new captain. At the beginning of the season, Cairney was initially absent due to an injury sustained in preparation. After his return he had knee problems after a short time. He scored his first goal of the season on October 28, 2017 against Bolton Wanderers . In the winter transfer window, Fulham turned down € 17 million and € 20 million transfer offers for Cairney from West Ham United. After a bumpy start to the season for Fulham, the Cottagers were in 12th place at the end of the first half of the season. From December 23, 2017 to April 27, 2018, however, Fulham did not lose 23 games in a row and had the chance to overtake runner-up Cardiff City on the last day of the game and gain direct promotion to the Premier League. Since they lost to Birmingham City 3-1, you had to try again on the playoffs to make promotion. The opponent in the semifinals was Derby County . The first leg at Derby's Pride Park Stadium ended 1-0 for the home team. However, Fulham won the second leg 2-0 and moved into the final against Aston Villa . In the final on May 26, 2018, Cairney scored the goal of the day at Wembley and brought the Cottagers back to the Premier League after four seasons in the Championship.
On July 5, 2018, Tom Cairney extended his contract with Fulham FC until 2023. Despite enormous investments, he led his team onto the pitch as captain in Fulham's comeback season in the Premier League. In the 4-2 home win against Burnley FC on matchday three, in which he succeeded in assisting, he injured his ankle and had to leave the field in the closing stages. This injury forced him to watch for a month. After he was substituted on at the end of September, in the 3-0 defeat by Everton, in their home Goodison Park , he was out of the next two games due to the same injury. After returning on October 27 in a 3-0 home defeat by AFC Bournemouth , he only missed two more league games. From the bad start of the season with five points from the first 12 games one could not recover in the course of the season. He scored his only goal of the season on April 13, 2019 in a 2-0 home win against Everton on matchday 34. This first league win since January, however, had no effect on the precarious situation in the table, as it was previously determined as relegated. In the next 2019/20 season , as captain, he led his team to promotion and contributed eight goals in 42 league appearances.
National team
Due to his Scottish father, Cairney could also play for Scotland, which he also strived for. In September 2009 he was nominated for the first time for Scotland's U-19 . He made his debut on September 9 in a 3-1 loss to Iceland . For the U-19 he completed two missions. He made his U-21 debut on August 11, 2010 against Sweden . His first goal was on August 10, 2011 in a 3-1 win over Norway . Between August 2010 and February 2012 he played six games for Scotland's U-21s, in which he managed one goal.
For A selection of Scotland Tom Cairney debuted on March 22, 2017 against Canada .
