Brentford FC

Beginnings and unsuccessful loan transactions

Alfie Mawson, who until then played in the youth teams of Reading FC , moved to Brentford FC in 2010 . Initially active again in the youth of Brentford, he received a two-year contract with the Bees' professional team in 2012 . Mawson was awarded three times in a row to the fifth division Maidenhead United for which he was used in a total of twelve league games. After returning to Brentford, he was awarded again in January 2013, this time to Luton Town . For the National League club Mawson came in a year only to a single use. On January 31, 2014, Mawson moved to the fifth class National League for the fifth time in his short career when Welling United loaned him until the end of the 2013/14 season. There he was used in 9 games in which he scored a goal.

Breakthrough with the Wycombe Wanderers

On August 9, 2014, he moved to the Football League Two club Wycombe Wanderers on loan for a month , where he was to replace the injured Gary Doherty . After Mawson was used in the first six games of the 2014/15 season in all games and showed attractive performances in the Wanderers jersey, the club extended the loan deal until January 1, 2015. Mawson played every game over 90 minutes up to the 18th matchday until an injury forced him to sit out for a game. He then moved back to his place in central defense alongside his former teammate at Brentford Aaron Pierre .

On January 3, Mawson's loan was extended again, this time until the end of the season. In the rest of the season Mawson was missing a minute more and came to 45 league games. The Wycombe Wanderers finished the season in 4th place and now had the opportunity to secure the last promotion place via the playoffs. In the first leg of the semi-final against Plymouth Argyle , Mawson was placed in central defense alongside Pierre. Wycombe was able to win the game at Home Park , Plymouth's home stadium, 3-2 and secure an excellent starting position for the second leg. In Adams Park , Mawson finally became the match winner when he was able to prepare the 1-0 for Paul Hayes and in minute 35 personally scored the preliminary decision with his head. The game ended 2-1 and Wycombe was in the final of the playoff for promotion to Football League One . In the final, they met Southend United at Wembley . The game went into overtime after a 0-0 draw in regular time. There Wycombe took the lead in the 95th minute with an own goal, but conceded the equalizer in minute 120 + 2. In the penalty shootout, Mawson converted his attempt, but his team ultimately lost 8: 7 and had to bury their hopes for promotion. Alfie Mawson was named Wycombe's Player of the Season by players and fans alike after his strong season. In the choice of League Two Player of the Season, he finished 3rd.

Barnsley FC

After the loan ended, he did not return to Brentford and let his contract expire. After three years at Brentford without ever playing a game for the Bees , he signed a three-year contract with Barnsley FC . Mawson also shone in the Football League One with continuity. The season 2015/16 started Mawson even as captain of his team. Mawson won the EFL Trophy with Barnsley on April 3, 2016 , when they defeated Oxford United 3-2 in the final . Also in the league, he was convincing in the central defense of the Tykes and was used in 45 league games. Barnsley finished the league in 6th place and was able to qualify for the promotion playoffs. After clearly knocking out FC Walsall with two wins in the semifinals , they were also able to defeat FC Millwall 3-1 in the final and thus rose to the Football League Championship .

Swansea City

After four appearances for Barnsley in the championship, Alfie Mawson moved to the Welsh Premier League club Swansea City on Deadline Day 2016 . He made his debut for his new club on October 22, 2016 in a goalless draw against Watford FC . His first goal in the Swans jersey came on January 3, 2017 in a 2-1 away win over Crystal Palace . In the next season 2017/18 , his club got into relegation difficulties. Even Mawson, who was used in all 38 games, could not prevent Swansea's relegation.

Fulham FC

After Swansea's relegation, Mawson moved to the Premier League , who transferred a transfer fee of around 17 million euros for his services to Wales. Mawson signed a four-year contract with the Cottagers . In the 2018/19 season he made 15 appearances for the Cottagers and had to accept relegation to the championship with the club. In the next 2019/20 season he returned to the Premier League with Fulham. For him, however, the season was already over in January 2020 due to a knee injury from which he could not recover until August. In total, he played 27 league games.

National team

Mawson played six times for England's U-21 national team . He scored his only goal at the U-21 European Football Championship in 2017 in the win against Slovakia .

On March 15, 2018, Mawson was nominated for the English A-selection squad for the friendly games against the Netherlands and Italy .
