The Barnsley FC (officially: Barnsley Football Club ), also known as The Tykes (The dog), is a traditional football club from the north of England Barnsley . The club plays its home games at Oakwell Stadium, which has 23,009 seats .

history

The Barnsley FC in 1887 as Barnsley St. Peter's established and received its present name in 1897 Barnsley Football Club . The club had its most successful period at the beginning of the 20th century, when it reached the final of the English FA Cup twice . After the 1910 final was lost in the replay on April 28 against Newcastle United with 0: 2 (first game: 1: 1), the Cup was won on April 24, 1912 by defeating West Bromwich Albion (1: 0 after Extra time in the replay, 1st game: 0-0). In the following years Barnsley FC commuted between the second and fourth highest English division. On February 15, 1936, the club had its highest attendance to date in the FA Cup game against Stoke City with 40,255 visitors.

The most successful period in Barnsley's recent history began in the 1980/81 season with the promotion to the then second-rate Second Division and was crowned by the first promotion to the top division, the Premier League in 1997. There you could even defeat Liverpool in their Anfield stadium, with the German Lars Leese guarding the goal. However, Barnsley FC could not hold the class and relegation took place after only one year. After the unsuccessful recovery in the 1999/2000 season, when they failed in the play-offs, the slow descent of the club began back into the third division due to financial difficulties. In 2006, the club managed to return to what is now called the Football League Championship with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out in the playoff final against Swansea City , who moved up two years later .

In the 2007/08 season, Barnsley FC even reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup after surprising victories against Liverpool FC in the round of 16 and Chelsea FC in the quarter-finals , but then failed against Cardiff City .

At the end of the 2012/13 season the relegation with the 21st place could just be avoided, Barnsley rose in 2014 as the penultimate from the Football League Championship in the third-rate EFL League One . In 2016 they returned to League 2 with wins in the playoffs against Walsall FC and Millwall .
