José Manuel Ferreira de Morais or short José Morais (born July 27, 1965 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese football coach .

Career

José Morais started his coaching career in 2000 with a junior coaching activity at Benfica Lisbon . After a year he took on a position as head coach at Westfalia Herne and then at Dresdner SC .

In 2003 he returned to his homeland and worked at FC Porto as José Mourinho's assistant coach . After Mourinho left Porto for Chelsea after a year , Morais decided to continue working as head coach. He coached CD Santa Clara , Assyriska Föreningen , FC Al-Hazm , the Yemeni national team and ES de Tunis in succession .

From the summer of 2008 he was back on the coaching staff of José Mourinho and accompanied them to Inter Milan , Real Madrid and Chelsea. In 2014 he decided to work as head coach again and took over al-Shabab . He returned from this club after a few months and worked again at Chelsea as Mourinho's assistant coach. After Mourinho's dismissal, he also left the club.

For the second half of the 2015/16 season he took over the Turkish first division club Antalyaspor . About a month after being hired, he suffered a cerebral haemorrhage before the league game against Fenerbahçe Istanbul and was briefly in mortal danger. He was discharged from the hospital in mid-February 2016 and started working at Antalyaspor a few days later. As a consequence of a disappointing start to the season for the club's management, when Antalyaspor finished last in the table after six matchdays with two draws and four defeats, Morais was dismissed.

In October 2016 he was introduced as the new trainer of AEK Athens . He got rid of this job after only about three months in January 2017, the reason being the continued unsuccessfulness of the team.

In February 2018, Morais became the new coach of English second division club Barnsley . He left the club in May 2018 after failing to prevent relegation from the Football League Championship .
