Assyriska FF Södertälje ( German : Assyrischer Fußballverein Södertälje ) is a Swedish football club in the city of Södertälje , southwest of the capital Stockholm .

history

The sports club was founded in 1971 by Assyrian immigrants. He received his football department in 1974 and started official game operations in the Swedish league system in 1975. The club rose step by step and in 1985 already reached the 4th division. In 1992 the first promotion to the 2nd Swedish league followed . In the mid-1990s, the club was successfully coached by German coach Peter Antoine in the second division.

In the run-up to the promotion to the Allsvenskan at the end of the 2004 season, there were sometimes violent, xenophobic discussions in Sweden, as the club had only made the promotion thanks to the revocation of Örebro SK's license . In the season 2005 the club played for the first time in the highest Swedish league and celebrated there on April 17th against IFK Göteborg the first victory.

But then the rapid relegation followed: At the end of the season Assyriska rose with only four games won, relegated to the Superettan . In the following season, the club surprisingly placed in the second division only as thirteenth in the table and had to go into relegation. There they met Bunkeflo IF in October 2006 and after a 0-0 draw in the first leg they had to accept a 1-1 draw at home. Thus, according to the away goals rule, the relegation to the third division was certain. In the 2007 season, however, the club managed to return to the Superettan as champions of the third division Division 1 Norra . In the following seasons Assyriska narrowly failed to rise: In the 2008 season, the club fell back to fourth place after 29 matchdays among the top three on the last matchday, in the following season he reached third place in the table and thus the relegation games against Djurgårdens IF , in these they were only narrowly and unhappy with a 3-0 defeat after extra time in the second leg after the first leg had been won with a 2-0 win. In 2010, the fourth place in the table - but five points behind GIF Sundsvall - meant missing the first division return.

All home games are played on artificial turf in the Södertälje Arena, which opened in 2006. Even today there is still a great relationship between Assyrian immigrants and the association. In terms of players, however, Sweden now make up almost half of the squad.
