Erland Folke Henry Hellström (born December 16, 1980 in Kaiserslautern ) is a Swedish football player . The goalkeeper is the son of the former Swedish international Ronnie Hellström .

Career

Teenage years and breakthrough in the men's field

Hellström, who was born in the Federal Republic of Germany , moved with his family to Upplands Väsby in 1984 after his father's career ended at 1. FC Kaiserslautern . In 1986 he started playing football here at Bollstanäs SK before joining the youth team at Väsby IK at the age of eleven . In 1996 he won the St. Erikscupen with the youth team , one of the most important competitions for Swedish youth teams .

1997 Hellström moved up to the squad of the third division team from Väsby IK, but played in parallel for the youth team in the Juniorallsvenskan . On the last day of the 1997 season he made his debut in the men's division for the club in the 3-2 loss to Karlstad BK in Division II Västra Svealand . In the following season he was part of the squad, but could not get the place between the posts due to his susceptibility to injury. It was not until the summer of 1999 that he established himself as a regular in the club's goal and was able to fight for the championship of Division II Östra Svealand with him . He also guarded the goal in the subsequent three relegation games, but as second behind FC Café Opera the promotion was missed.

Swedish champion as a substitute

Hellström left Väsby IK in December 1999 to work from the following season as a substitute for the former national goalkeeper Lars Eriksson at Hammarby IF in the Allsvenskan . It was not until September 10, 2001, before he stood between the posts for the first time in the Swedish elite series. In the 2-2 draw against BK Häcken , he replaced the actual number one and thus contributed to winning the Lennart Johansson Cup as the Swedish national champion. After Eriksson's career ended, a new goalkeeper was signed with Ante Covic . After the Australian was able to establish himself between the posts, the club decided to lend Hellström in the 2003 season.

Regular player in the second division and promotion to the Allsvenskan

Hellström therefore moved to Assyriska FF in the Superettan . In the second division he established himself in the gate and the club signed him after a year. At the end of the year he reached the final of the national cup with the second division team trained by Tom Turesson . However, alongside Pierre Bengtsson , Christos Christoforidis , Michael Borgqvist , Johan Ländin and Dennis Östlundh , the team lost the final against IF Elfsborg with two goals from Lars Nilsson with a 2-0 defeat.

In his second season with the club from Södertälje Hellström completed all 30 games of the season over the complete distance and reached the third place in the table with the club, which meant qualifying for the relegation games to Allsvenskan. The team lost the duel against third bottom of the first division Örgryte IS after a 2-1 home win and a 0-1 away defeat by an own goal in stoppage time thanks to the away goals rule . However, since the license was withdrawn from the first division club Örebro SK , Assyriska moved up to the first division as the first guest workers club in Sweden. For the first division newcomer, however, the Swedish House of Lords proved to be too strong, the club had to accept the direct relegation. Even after relegation, the goalkeeper was one of the top performers of his club and played 18 games before he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in the summer of 2006 and was out for the rest of the season.

Return to Hammarby IF and bad luck with injuries

After Assyriska crashed straight into the third division from the first division and his contract with the club expired, Hellström announced his departure from the club. Covic had left Sweden for Australia after the 2006 season , so Hammarby IF registered interest in signing the former substitute as the new number one. Since this was injured, however, Hammarby IF also loaned Richard Kingson for three months to bridge the time until Hellström was fully rehabilitated. After Kingson left the club at the end of June after the loan period expired, Hellström returned to the football field in the 2-4 defeat at Helsingborgs IF . However, he injured himself again in the following game, so that the club developed a goalkeeping crisis as a result and within a year and a half six different goalkeepers stood between the posts. After his substitute Benny Lekström , who was able to displace Hellström, who had recovered in the meantime, also injured himself, Hellström came back into the goal. However, he injured himself again when he suffered a break in the game against IFK Göteborg in October and was therefore out for a long time. For the remainder of the season both were replaced by young goalkeeper George Moussan while goalkeeping coach Lars Eriksson sat on the bench as a substitute and for the 2008 season the club signed the substitute for the national team Rami Shaaban and Kristoffer Björklund .

Hellström subsequently remained in the role of substitute. Therefore, Hammarby IF loaned him to the second division Väsby United in March 2009 until the summer to collect match practice after the long injury-related break. There he made two league appearances by the summer break. After his return to Hammarby IF, the club and the players decided to terminate the contract. As a result he was without a club.

In February 2011 Hellström officially ended his active career and became goalkeeping coach at IK Frej parallel to his full-time work as an economist .
