Michael Borgqvist (born December 17, 1967 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish football player . Following his active career, which was crowned by winning the Swedish championship, the defensive midfielder moved to the coaching bench.

Career

Player career

Borgqvist began playing football at Vårberg / Skärholmens SK in 1973 , but switched to the youth team at IFK Stockholm two years later . After a short stay at Brinkens IF in the 1982 season, he joined the AIK's youth department at the beginning of 1983 . There he went through the individual youth teams and advanced as a junior player in the squad of the adult team competing in the Allsvenskan . Although he did not appear in a league for the team, only in the Stockholm Cup, to whose win on penalties against Vasalunds IF in 1986 he contributed as a successful shooter, and at the renowned indoor tournament Nackas minne he played for the team several times.

In the summer of 1987, Borgqvist moved to the lower-class local rivals Spårvägens GoIF . With the third division team, he played for promotion to the second division, which was initially just missed as runner-up behind Väsby IK and Motala AIF , before he finished the season with the team in the 1989 season as the season winner in the north with eleven points ahead of second-placed IFK Östersund . With a fourth place in the second division North, he surprised with the newcomer in the new division. He then returned to AIK. Right from the start he was at the side of Björn Kindlund , Wadym Jewtuschenko , Gary Sundgren and Bernt Ljung and was used in all 18 regular season games as well as the ten games in the championship finals. Under coach Tommy Söderberg , the team moved into the championship round in the 1992 season . Although he missed a game in the finals, in the final 3-2 win against Malmö FF he was on the field and was able to celebrate winning the Von Rosens Cup as a championship trophy. In the following years he was still a regular player, but the club slipped in the table.

During the 1995 season , Borgqvist lost his regular place, not least because of a dismissal in the game against Halmstads BK . Had the season ended in eighth place in the table, Erik Hamrén took over the coaching position at the club from the following season. After he announced that he no longer wanted to rely on the services of Borgqvist, he left the club despite the contract that was valid until 1997 and returned to Spårvägens FF, as Spårvägens GoIF was now called. With the second division, he missed as third in the table behind Västerås SK and Hammarby IF promotion to Allsvenskan, but was poached by local rivals Djurgårdens IF . With the club relegated to the second division in the previous year, he qualified as second in the table for the relegation games , in which, however, Östers IF prevailed. After he was promoted in the following year - at the end of the 1998 season he was named Player of the Year at the club - he played 22 games alongside Lucas Nilsson , Niclas Rasck , Sharbel Touma and Magnus Pehrsson in the 1999 first division and Stefan Alvén . Despite a goal from him, the direct relegation could not be prevented. After Borgqvist's contract was not renewed, he moved on to Assyriska Föreningen . With his new club he played in the Superettan for four years before ending his career at the end of 2003.

Coaching career

In 2005, Borqvist replaced Hans Eskilsson as coach at Enköpings SK . Partly back on the field himself, he led the team that had been relegated from the second division in the previous year, as the season winner of Division 2 Norra Svealand in the promotion round of the six third division champions. There he failed with the club after a 0-0 draw with a 2-0 defeat at Umeå FC . The team was thus qualified for the newly introduced Division 1 , whose northern season they then dominated and rose to the Superettan as first in the table. After the successful resurgence, the club's leaders decided not to renew Borgqvist's contract.

In August 2007 Borgqvist took over the training at his former play station Assyriska FF. By the end of the season, he led the relegated to the top of the third division and rose with him to the Superettan. For a long time, the team was also in the top group in the Superettan and had a chance of a direct march through to the Allsvenskan, but due to a period of weakness at the end of the 2008 season, the club ultimately finished fourth, the last non-promotion place. Then the club did not extend the expiring contract and signed Roberth Johansson as his successor.

After almost a year without a club, Borgqvist returned to the coaching bench. The first division relegated Hammarby IF secured himself in December 2009 for the second division season 2010 his services and brought the former England professional Jesper Blomqvist as his assistant coach. In the course of the season, however, the team only placed in the midfield. He resigned from his post in early September following threats against him by strangers.
