Bernt Åke Ljung (born May 8, 1958 in Borlänge ) is a former Swedish football player . The goalkeeper , who made seven international matches for the Swedish national team, moved to the coaching bench after his active career.

Career

Ljung began playing football at Forssa BK before joining IK Brage 's youth in 1969 . In 1976 he moved up to the first-team squad at the traditional club and established himself as a regular goalkeeper at the age of 17. In the following year he managed with the team supervised by Rolf Zetterlund the promotion to the second division when he took first place with the club in the promotion round before BK Häcken , Degerfors IF and Motala AIF . In the northern season he finished second with the promoted team in the first second division season, one point behind IFK Sundsvall , before the first division promotion succeeded in the following year with 20 wins in 26 games. In the Allsvenskan , the upswing of the club continued, in the first division season in 1980 he just missed qualifying for the European Cup with the club as fourth.

After the end of the season, Zetterlund left the club and moved to the first division AIK . Ljung followed him to the club from Solna, who paid a transfer fee of 600,000 Swedish kronor, the highest ever transfer fee paid for a move within Sweden. Accordingly, he was immediately in the regular formation at his new club and played all 26 games of the season. With his good performances he had also played his way into the circle of the national team. Under national coach Lars Arnesson , he made his debut in February 1982 in a 1: 2 defeat against the Finnish national team at the side of players like Robert Prytz , Ingemar Erlandsson , Sten-Ove Ramberg and Tony Persson in the national team. Shortly before the beginning of the following season, however, he injured his knee when he twisted his knee on landing in a pre-season game against Hammarby IF after an aerial duel with Mats Werner and Billy Ohlsson and tore a cruciate ligament . As a result, he was replaced by Anders Wikström, who was actually the third goalkeeper, and Göran Hagberg, who was signed for a half-series in the summer .

After his return at the beginning of the 1983 season he was again a regular goalkeeper at AIK. While he was able to intervene in the championship race with the club that had played against relegation in the previous two years and qualified for the championship finals, he fought his way back into the national team. He was mostly a substitute behind Ravelli, but played three internationals during the season. Started as first in the championship play-offs, he failed with his team in the semifinals at the eventual champions IFK Göteborg . In the following season, the national player moved into the finals with the club, this time the team lost the quarter-finals against IFK Norrköping .

While Ljung lost his place in the national team in the course of 1985 and was ousted by Thomas Wernersson and Jan Möller as a substitute behind Ravelli, he won his first title in the summer. In the cup final, he prevailed against Östers IF alongside Thomas Andersson , Göran Göransson , Björn Kindlund and Lars Zetterlund when he saved three penalty kicks. He then entered the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1985/86 , where he failed with the club in the second round at the Czechoslovak representative FK Dukla Prague . As a regular goalkeeper, he ran for the club until 1987. After the team got into the relegation battle, those responsible decided to restructure the team and signed Anders Forsberg and Johny Murray as new goalkeepers.

Ljung joined the second division club Vasalunds IF . With his new club he played for promotion to the Allsvenskan. In the 1989 season he failed with the team only because of the poorer goal difference behind the same point leaders Hammarby IF.

After three years Ljung returned to AIK when the new coach Tommy Söderberg signed him to replace Joakim Sjöström . In the first division season in 1991 he reached with the team in the regular season reduced to ten teams, the championship finals of the best six teams, which was played in league form, and was there with three wins last. In the following season, the club started fourth in the regular season in the final round. With six wins in ten games, the team around Pascal Simpson , Wadym Jewtuschenko , Dick Lidman and Gary Sundgren outdid the competition and won the Von Rosens Cup for the championship title.

However, AIK subsequently relied on the young talent Magnus Hedman , so that Ljung left the club after the championship season. At his first professional station, IK Brage, he played one more season before he worked there for three years as a goalkeeping coach. He then became the club's junior coach before being promoted to head coach of the first team in 2003. In 2004 he was released from office due to unsuccessfulness.
