Career

Persson played at Kalmar FF in his youth . After he had already been in the squad of the competition team occasionally at the end of the 1970s, he made his debut in the 1980 season in the Allsvenskan and quickly established himself as a regular in the team. At the same time, he moved into the focus of the national team, for which he made his debut in early 1981.

Persson was subsequently in a relegation battle with Kalmar FF, but was able to win the decisive games in the course of 1981: in the summer of 1981 he won the final of the Swedish National Cup with the club , at the end of the year the relegation games against IFK Eskilstuna . In autumn he provided a highlight when he scored the winning goal as a substitute in the final minutes as part of qualifying for the 1982 World Cup in a 2-1 away win at Portugal in the last group game of the Swedes and thus the Swedish selection in the race for - ultimately behind Scotland and Northern Ireland missed - participation held. In the following year only one relegation place jumped out, this time he failed with the team in the relegation to Gefle IF . He went to the second division with the club, at the same time his national team career ended. After a direct resurgence, he stayed with Kalmar FF for two years, but was only used irregularly.

In early 1986 Persson moved to the then third division GAIS in Gothenburg. Within the next two years he led the club back to the Allsvenskan as a regular. In 1987 he was again in the cup final, which ended with a 2-0 defeat against his former club Kalmar FF. At the end of the 1989 season , which he finished with the club as third in the table and then failed in the semi-finals of the championship round at last year's champions Malmö FF , he ended his career after 94 league games and 14 goals for GAIS his active career. In total, he had scored 17 goals in 138 games in the Allsvenskan.

Persson later took on a position on the board of GAIS. Initially he was responsible for the youth sector, later for the football sector.
