The Kalmar Fotbollsförening , usually abbreviated as Kalmar FF or KFF is a football club from Kalmar in southeast Sweden . The club's greatest success is winning the Swedish championship in 2008 . In addition, the team was able to win the Svenska Cup three times and appeared several times as a participant in the European Cup. The club currently plays in the Swedish first division .

history

Early years (1910–1927)

The association was founded in 1910 under the name IF Göta . However, since there were already other clubs with this name, the club changed in 1912 after joining the Riksidrottsförbundet in IF Gothia . When the Fredriksskans sports field was inaugurated in Kalmar in 1918 , all local clubs came together for a conference. There the idea of a merger between IF Gothia and the local representative of the Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna was decided, so that the club Kalmar Idrottssällskap emerged, which was renamed Kalmar FF in 1927 .

Between second and third division (1927–1949)

1927 rose Kalmar FF in the second-rate Division 2 Sydsvenska . The march through to the Allsvenskan was just missed in the following year as second behind IFK Malmö . The team could not build on this success in the following years and rose in 1931 together with local rivals Kalmar AIK in the third division, but both teams managed to return immediately. After two years in the lower midfield, the next move to the third division was due in 1935.

This time Kalmar FF missed direct re-promotion. In 1937, with one point behind IFK Värnamo, the relay victory was missed and in the following years the club established itself in the front midfield of its third division season. 1943 succeeded the relay victory and after one prevailed in the promotion games against Högadals IS also the promotion to the second division.

In the first year after promotion Kalmar FF fought against relegation and was able to relegate the two relegated Olofström IF and BK Landora behind. From the following season, however, the team sat down in the front of the table without being able to intervene in the promotion race. After the second division had been concentrated from four to two seasons in 1947, the club succeeded two years later in the championship in the southern season of the second division and thus the first promotion to the Allsvenskan.

First years in the Allsvenskan (1949–1955)

After Kalmar FF debuted on July 31, 1949 in the 2-0 defeat by Degerfors IF in the Swedish elite series, they set up a record in Fredriksskans on September 4 of that year at the home game against Malmö FF with 15,093 spectators. At the end of the season, the club managed to stay ninth in the table. In the second year of membership in the first division, the team managed only two victories of the season and with only ten points, the club had to relegate from the Allsvenskan.

1953 Kalmar FF was again the season winner in the south and returned to the first division. Again, the team from Småland reached ninth place in the table to remain in the Swedish House of Lords, but was again missed in the second year of relegation.

Years in the second division (1955-1975)

The direct resurgence was missed as runner-up behind IFK Malmö and in the following seasons Kalmar FF found itself in the relegation battle. Sometimes the move into the third division was only prevented by the better goal difference. At the end of the 1960s, positions in the upper mid-range of the table succeeded again without getting beyond third place in 1969.

After further places in the no man's land of the table, the team again reached third place in 1973 and just missed the relay victory a year later, one point behind Örgryte IS . In the 1975 season, Kalmar FF won 21 of the 26 games of the season and thus managed to return to the Allsvenskan as the first in the table in the south after twenty years of second division.

Allsvenskan and first title (1976–1985)

The first season after the rise was mixed for Kalmar FF. In the end a sixth place in the table and thus relegation was not endangered, but there were also severe setbacks, such as the 2: 9 debacle against IFK Sundsvall in the club's hundredth first division game. In the 1977 season , the team knew how to surprise and earned third place in the table tied with runner-up IF Elfsborg . The following year the team moved into the final of the Svenska Cup for the first time, but missed the cup victory by a 2-0 defeat against champions Malmö FF. As a defeated cup finalist, the team moved into the European Cup for the first time, but in the 1978/79 European Cup Winners' Cup , the team failed in the first round at the Hungarian representative Ferencváros Budapest .

In the following seasons Kalmar FF established itself in the midfield of the first division. In the summer of 1981 the club was able to celebrate its first title when Elfsborg was defeated 4-0 in the final of the Svenska Cupen IF. In the league only one relegation place was occupied, IFK Eskilstuna could be defeated by a 2-0 success and a 2-2 draw. In the following year, only one relegation place jumped out, the club failed this time in the relegation to Gefle IF and had to relegate to the second division.

Kalmar FF secured a place in the relegation as the relay winner. After a 0-1 defeat at the beginning against Djurgårdens IF , a 3-1 win in the second leg was enough for a direct return to the Swedish House of Lords. As seventh in the table in the 1984 season , the team moved into the championship finals, but failed at the start of Hammarby IF . In the following year, the runner-up succeeded in regular time, in the final round two defeats against Örgryte IS in the first round mean again the early elimination.

Crash and Return (1986-2003)

Henrik Rydström has been through ups and downs at the club since 1993

The team could not build on the successes and had to leave the first division in 1986 as penultimate in the table. As a second division team they knew how to surprise in the cup and with a 2-0 final victory over GAIS they achieved the second triumph in the club's history. In Division 1 Södra , however, the club only managed eight wins of the season and with one point behind the saving bank they had to go into the third division together with Skövde AIK .

Kalmar FF managed with only two season defeats as champions of Division 2 Södra, the direct return to the second division, where they could establish themselves in midfield. 1994 succeeded the vice championship of the southern season, so that the club qualified for the relegation to the Allsvenskan. The return to the elite series was missed after a 4-1 loss and a 2-2 draw against Hammarby IF. This was followed by another crash and in 1996 the club had to relegate back to the third division with 23 points as the bottom.

Again Kalmar FF succeeded in direct promotion, the teams remained undefeated in 22 games of the season. The club was also able to dominate the league in Division 1 Södra and won the season ahead of Landskrona BoIS . In the Allsvenskan the team reached eleventh place. In the following relegation, the team lost 1: 2 at GAIS and had to be relegated again after a 1: 1 draw in the second leg.

In the second division managed 2000 only one place in the lower midfield, the gap to the relegation ranks was three points. The team consolidated and as champions of the Superettan succeeded in rising again in the following year . The reputation of an elevator team seemed to manifest itself when only the last place in the table jumped out in the 2002 season , but the second division dominated with seven points ahead of runner-up Trelleborgs FF and 19 points on the first non-promotion place occupied by Åtvidabergs FF and thus managed the renewed promotion has been.

Establishment in the Allsvenskan and championship (since 2004)

Patrik Ingelsten led the team to the championship in 2008 as the top scorer

As a climber, Kalmar FF was able to achieve fifth place in the 2004 season. In the following season, the team reached third place, through which they reported back as a participant in the UEFA Intertoto Cup on the international stage. In 2006 they reached the semi-finals in the cup competition, and a year later, in addition to the runner-up title, they achieved the third cup triumph in the club's history, when the champions IFK Göteborg were defeated 3-0.

After the team from Kalmar FF had dominated the 2008 season for long stretches and above all shone through scoring threats, they secured the Swedish championship for the first time in the club's history on the last matchday, November 9th of that year. A 2-2 draw at Halmstads BK was enough to relegate IF Elfsborg to second place, one point behind. With Patrik Ingelsten , who scored 19 goals, and 15-time goalscorer Viktor Elm , the team also provided two of the three most successful goal scorers. As in the previous year, the cup final was reached, but it was lost to last year's finalists IFK Göteborg.

After another title win was added at the beginning of the following year with a 1-0 win over IFK Göteborg by a goal by Daniel Mendes with the win of the Supercup , the team failed in their first games in the Champions League in the summer . Due to the away goals rule , the club were eliminated after a 2-0 away defeat by Hungarian representatives Debreceni Vasutas SC despite a 3-1 home win in the second qualifying round of the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League . Weakened in particular by a number of departures - many top performers had attracted international attention with their title wins - the club was unable to confirm its success in the following years and slipped into the middle of the table in the championship. In the national cup he reached the final again in 2011, but national champions Helsingborgs IF got the double with a 3-1 win .
