The Östersunds Fotbollsklubb (short: Östersunds FK) is a Swedish football club in Östersund . The team has been playing in the top league Allsvenskan since 2016 - for the first time since it was founded in 1996 .

history

Östersunds FK was founded on October 31, 1996, when Östersund wanted to form a powerful team. For this purpose, a new team was put together from the teams from Ope IF , IFK Östersund and Östersund / Torvalla FF , which as Östersunds FK took over from Ope IF in the third-class Division 2 Norrland from the 1997 season .

Having started with the goal of promotion to the second division , Östersunds FK found themselves in the lower part of the table in the first season , with only two points ahead of the relegated Bodens BK . In the second season, the team was able to almost fulfill their hopes. As runner-up, the team qualified for the promotion games. After she was able to prevail in the first round against Tyresö FF , she was eliminated in the second round after a 0-2 home defeat and a 1-1 draw against Gefle IF .

In 1999 Östersunds FK won the championship in the third division. However, since the second division was reformed and combined in a season, this meant again only the qualification for promotion games. As the bottom of the table in the promotion round you had to let FC Café Opera go first and again missed promotion to the second division. In the following years, the team always took top positions, but they couldn't get beyond a runner-up in 2003.

In the league reform in 2005, when the third division was combined into two seasons after the season, Östersunds FK managed as runner-up to qualify for this new third division. There the team played against relegation, which could be avoided thanks to the better goal difference compared to competitor Robertsfors IK . A year later they found themselves in a relegation battle. In May 2007 a cooperation with Swansea City was concluded. Among other things, young players of the English third division team moved to Sweden to gain match practice there. In addition, the team from Wales played a friendly game.

After several years in the relegation battle Östersunds FK reached only one relegation place in the third division season 2010 and rose together with Carlstad United BK and Arameiska / Syrianska Botkyrka IF in the fourth division. The stay in Division 2 lasted only one year. After the direct re-promotion, the team managed to get promoted to the second division for the first time with the direct march at the end of 2012. At the end of 2015, she was promoted to the first-class Allsvenskan for the first time with second place in the Superettan .

For the 2017/18 season, the club took part in the European Cup for the first time because of the national cup victory and defeated the Turkish top club Galatasaray Istanbul in the second qualifying round for the Europa League with 2-0 (H) and 1-1 (A). Subsequently, the Luxembourg representative CS Fola Esch could be defeated in the first and second leg. In the play-off games, Östersunds FK lost 3-1 at PAOK Thessaloniki , but were able to qualify for the group stage with a 2-0 win in the second leg due to the away goals rule . Surprisingly, Östersund prevailed in the group with Hertha BSC , Athletic Bilbao and Sorja Luhansk and qualified for the round of 32, in which they were eliminated despite a 2-1 second leg win at the Emirates Stadium in London against Arsenal .
