The NK Osijek is a Croatian football club from the Slavonian city of Osijek (dt .: Osijek ) and currently plays in the first Croatian football league . The designation Nogometni klub (NK) corresponds to the German football club (FK).

history

Founded in 1947 under the name NK Proleter Osijek , renamed NK Slavonija Osijek in 1961 and finally NK Osijek in 1967 , the club rose to the first Yugoslav league in 1977 . The greatest successes in Yugoslavia were sixth place in 1984 and reaching the cup semi-finals in 1989.

In the first season of the newly founded 1. HNL , none of the nominal home games were played in Osijek itself due to the Croatian War, and third place was nevertheless achieved. The first participation in the UEFA Cup was in 1995, the greatest success in the club's history was the Cup victory in Croatia in 1999. In the 2000/01 season Osijek reached the round of 16 in the Uefa Cup after victories against Brondby Copenhagen and Rapid Vienna .

NK Osijek plays in the Gradski Vrt stadium , which has 18,856 seats. It was built in the early 1980s. The Croatian national team often played qualifying and friendly matches at Gradski Vrt.

Fans

The NK Osijek fan club is called Kohorta . The organization of the fans began in the 1970s. At that time the fan club was called "Šokci".

After the "Torcida" (Hajduk Split), the "Bad Blue Boys" (Dinamo Zagreb) and the Armada (Rijeka), "Kohorta" is the fourth largest fan club in Croatia.

Osijek is known for its football academy. Some of Croatia's best strikers started their careers in Osijek. The best known and most successful of them was Davor Šuker . He was top scorer with the national team and third at the 1998 World Cup in France . Also known are Goran Vlaović , Igor Cvitanović , Robert Špehar and currently Danijel Pranjić . Špehar is still the best goalscorer in the club's history with 58 goals.
