Goran Vlaović (born August 7, 1972 in Nova Gradiška , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian football player on the position of the striker .

Vlaović began his professional career in 1989 with the Croatian club NK Osijek . After two seasons in which he had scored eleven goals in 24 games, he moved to Dinamo Zagreb in 1992 . With Zagreb he won the Croatian Championship (1993) and the Cup (1994); he came to a total of 81 first division appearances, in which he scored 61 goals. Thanks to his high hit rate (0.75 goals per match), Vlaović also secured the Croatian top scorer in 1993 and 1994 . His 29 goals in the 1993/94 season were the best in the Croatian first division until Eduardo Alves da Silva scored more goals in the 2006/07 season.

In 1994 Vlaović moved abroad and signed a contract with the Italian club Calcio Padova. After 18 goals in 50 matches for Padova, he moved to the Spanish club FC Valencia in 1996 , with whom he won the Supercup (1999) and the UEFA Intertoto Cup (1998) in addition to the Spanish Cup (1999) over the next four years . After 73 appearances in the Primera División , in which he scored 17 goals, he moved to the Greek club Panathinaikos Athens in 2000 . With Panathinaikos he won the Greek Championship and the Cup in 2004 and ended his active career after 64 games (29 goals) in the same year.

National team

Vlaović was a member of the Croatian national team between 1992 and 2002 and took part with this in the 1998 and 2002 World Championships. In 1996 he played at the European Championship in England , where he scored Croatia's first goal in an international tournament in the opening game against Turkey . His greatest achievement was third place at the 1998 World Cup in France . In 52 games for Croatia, Vlaović scored 15 goals.
