List of football top scorers (Croatia)
The list of football top scorer of the 1st HNL includes all top scorer of the league since its foundation in the 1992 season after Croatia's independence in 1991. The top scorer is the player who scores the most goals in the course of a season.
In 19 seasons 13 different players have been top scorer in the top division, five players have won the title twice. After Goran Vlaović had succeeded as the first player in 1993 and 1994, Igor Cvitanović , Tomo Šokota , Ivica Olić and Robert Špehar followed his example. The record goal scorer within a season is Eduardo , who scored 34 goals this season in the 2006/07 season. The first foreign top scorer in the 2007/08 season was Želimir Terkeš from Bosnia and Herzegovina , who scored 21 goals this season as a striker for NK Zadar .
Since both the mode in which the Croatian championship is played and the number of teams playing in the 1st HNL have varied several times over time, the number of goals and the average number of goals per game can be varied between the individual players Compare playing times only to a limited extent.
In the opening season of 1992, 12 teams played for the title in two legs, so that each club played 22 games this season. Then the number was increased - initially to 16 in the following year to 18 teams - and continued to play in the same mode, so that 30 and 34 match days respectively were completed. In 1994, however, the association reduced the number back to 16 teams and the following year to twelve clubs, with the mode also being changed. Initially, the twelve clubs played against each other once in the first half of the season, then the league was divided into two groups, with the first five teams of regular time playing for the championship and the last seven teams against relegation. After returning to the previous style of play for a year, the mode with regular playing time and final series was established until 2006, with the division now comprising six teams. There were two seasons in which there were deviations. On the one hand in the 1999/2000 season, when the twelve teams each played three games against each other and thus each had to play a total of 33 games. On the other hand, in the 2001/02 season, when again 16 teams played the championship in the first and second round. From 2006 to 2009, the association played against each other again in three games, and for the 2009/10 season they returned to the rule with 16 teams in the round two.
