Igor Cvitanović (born November 1, 1970 in Osijek , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian football player .
The striker played in the top league of Yugoslavia, Croatia, Spain and Japan and was four times champion, five times cup winner and two top scorer. With 126 goals scored, he is the record scorer of the 1st HNL in Croatia .
Career
Coming from the youth of NK Osijek , Cvitanović was used by Dinamo Zagreb in the 1989/90 season for the first time in the first Yugoslav league. With the establishment of the 1. HNL he played one season on loan at Varteks Varaždin , before he was Croatian champion and cup winner three times with Dinamo Zagreb from 1992 to 1997 and Croatia's top scorer in 1996 and 1997. In the winter break 1997/98 he went for one and a half years to the Spanish first division club Real Sociedad San Sebastián , where he could not prevail against Darko Kovačević and Ricardo Sá Pinto . Back in Zagreb he was able to contribute to another championship and another cup victory before he ran up for the Japanese football club Shimizu S-Pulse in calendar year 2002 . He finally let his career end with his hometown club NK Osijek.
In the Croatian national team Cvitanović made his debut on October 22, 1992 in Zagreb in a friendly against Mexico . In 1996 he was at the finals of the European Championship in the squad, but was not used. At the finals of the 1998 World Cup , he was initially also in the squad, but was sent home after a dispute with association coach Miroslav Blažević . In total, he played for the national team 27 times and scored four goals.
After his career, Cvitanović made headlines in the tabloids , leading to threat charges .
