The 1. HNL 1997/98 was the seventh season of the highest Croatian football league . The season started on August 3, 1997 and ended on May 10, 1998.
NK Croatia Zagreb was able to successfully defend its title.

The season started with twelve teams. First there was a preliminary round with a return leg, then the best six teams played the champions and the last six played in the relegation round. Half of the points from the preliminary round were taken over.
The bottom of the table was relegated directly, the penultimate had to be relegated.
