The 1. HNL 2002/03 was the twelfth season of the highest Croatian football league . The season started on July 24, 2002 and ended on May 31, 2003.
The defending champion was NK Zagreb .

In contrast to the previous season, this season was again carried out in a two-stage format. The top twelve teams of the last season first played a preliminary round with a return leg. After that, the best six teams played the champions and the last six played in the relegation round.
The results from the preliminary round were transferred to the championship or relegation round. The bottom of the table was relegated directly, the penultimate had to be relegated.
