The NK Zagreb ( Nogometni klub Zagreb ), Zagreb for short , is a football club from the Croatian capital Zagreb .

history

The NK Zagreb was founded at the beginning of the 20th century. The exact date is unknown, but it can be ruled out that the club is connected to the PNIŠK (Prvi nogometni i športski klub, German 1st football and sports club ), which was founded in 1903 and dissolved again in 1909 , as it is written in many books .

After the Second World War , they were promoted to the first Yugoslav league in the 1952/53 season. After several relegations and promotions and a total of 15 seasons in the first division, the last relegation in Yugoslavia took place in 1982.

Since the establishment of the 1st HNL in 1992, the club has been its member without interruption and in 2002 the Croatian championship was the greatest success in the club's history. The former championship team included u. a. Ivica Olić and Joško Popović . In the subsequent Champions League qualification , the NK was eliminated in the second round against Zalaegerszegi TE FC from Hungary.

In the 2012/13 season, the club was relegated to the 2nd HNL for the first time , when it was only twelfth and last in the table. However, the direct return to the 1st HNL succeeded. Then the crash followed. As bottom of the table, they relegated to the 2nd HNL in 2016 and in 2017, again bottom of the table, they went to the 3rd HNL. In 2019 the club even went down to the 4th HNL, in which it still plays today.

Stadion

Stadium in Kranjceviceva

NK Zagreb plays in the Zagreb "Stadion Kranjčevićeva", which has a capacity of 12,000 spectators. The stadium is named after the street it is located on, which in turn is named after the poet Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević . This earned the association the nickname "The Poets" (Croatian pjesnici ). It has been discussed for a long time whether the club should play together with Dinamo Zagreb in the Maksimir Stadium . There are enough examples in Europe, like in Munich or Milan. However, the supporters of the NK Zagreb vehemently oppose it. It wouldn't actually cause any problems, as the Maksimir Stadium is not owned by Dinamo, but owned by the City of Zagreb. There is a small group of fans called White Angels .
