Josip Kuže (born November 13, 1952 in Vranje , SFR Yugoslavia ; † June 16, 2013 in Zagreb , Croatia ) was a Yugoslav or Croatian football player and coach .
Career
Kuže was active for Dinamo Zagreb and completed eleven games for the Yugoslav U-21 national team . As a defender , he played 384 games between 1971 and 1981 and scored 14 goals for Dinamo.
After his active career, Kuže was initially a coach at Sydney Croatia (1982-1984) and Slavonski Brod (1985-1986). After that he was responsible for the youth teams at Dinamo Zagreb for a short time. In 1988 he became a coach at the Bosnian club FK Borac Banja Luka , before he took over the coaching position at his former club Dinamo Zagreb in 1989. In 1991 Kuže took over the coaching position at the second division club FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt . After relegation he switched to league competitor 1. FSV Mainz 05 , where he was in office until 1994. Then Kuže went to the Japanese first division club Gamba Osaka , for whom he worked as a coach from 1995 to 1999. From 1998 to 2000 Kuže trained again at Dinamo Zagreb before he succeeded Christoph Franke at Chemnitzer FC in September 2000 . After the desperate performance of the team, Kuže was released in November, but his successors could not prevent the CFC's relegation from the 2nd Bundesliga.
Kuže coached Inter Zaprešić in the 2003/04 season . In 2005 he was again coach at Dinamo Zagreb and led his team to the Croatian championship in the 2005/06 season. After the early exit from European competitions and a weak phase in the Croatian championship, his contract was terminated during the winter break of 2006/2007.
In October 2007 he succeeded the German Michael Nees as Rwanda's national coach . In May 2009 he became the national coach of the Albanian national team . In October 2011 they separated from him after missing the qualification for the European Football Championship 2012 .
Kuže died in June 2013 at the age of 60 from complications from a leukemia diagnosed a few months earlier .
