Career

societies

In 1999 his further football career led him to his Croatian hometown Dubrovnik to the lower class club NK GOŠK Dubrovnik . After two years, the first division club NK Zagreb signed him before he moved to the Russian Premier League club Schinnik Yaroslavl at the beginning of 2004 . At the beginning of 2006, Spahić came to Lokomotiv Moscow via the other station Torpedo Moscow . After a serious injury at his new employer, he couldn't get beyond the role of a reservist. In early 2009 Spahić was transferred to the second team of Lokomotiv Moscow after a suspension. The contract, which ran until 2012, was terminated in March 2009 by mutual agreement. In July 2009, Spahić signed a one-year contract with HSC Montpellier , which was extended for another year. In the 2010/11 season he was suspended for seven games after an elbow check, the longest suspension in Ligue 1 to date. In 2011 he moved to the Spanish Primera División for Sevilla FC . At the end of January 2013 Spahic was awarded to the Russian first division club Anzhi Makhachkala .

For the 2013/14 season he was signed by Bayer 04 Leverkusen . He scored his first two goals for Leverkusen on April 20, 2014 (31st matchday) in the Bundesliga match against 1. FC Nürnberg . On April 12, 2015, four days after the DFB Cup quarter-final game against FC Bayern Munich , which was lost 3-5 on penalties and in which Spahić physically attacked and partially injured several stadium stewards after the game, Bayer 04 Leverkusen solved the problem Contract with immediate effect.

On July 7, 2015, Spahić signed a one-year contract with Hamburger SV . He played his first league game for HSV on the first day of the 2015/16 season in a 5-0 away defeat against FC Bayern Munich . Spahić established himself in the regular formation under Bruno Labbadia . Meanwhile, HSV managed to improve their performance and, as a result of six wins in the following 16 games, they ended up in tenth place in the table during the winter break. At the end of May 2016, his contract term was extended by one year to 2017. At the beginning of winter preparation 2017, Spahić was released from training and games by the new coach Markus Gisdol and removed from the squad. In addition, he was offered a dissolution of his contract, which was still valid until the end of the season, which he did not accept. On January 31, Spahić and HSV reached an out-of-court agreement to terminate the contract.

National team

Spahic made his debut on June 7, 2003 in Craiova in the Bosnian-Herzegovinian national football team . In the European Championship qualifier against Romania , he came on in the 72nd minute for Mirko Hrgović . In the following qualification game on September 6, 2003 in Zenica against Norway , he was on the starting line-up for the first time. On May 7, 2014, Spahić was appointed to the national team for the 2014 World Cup by Bosnian coach Safet Sušić . Led by team captain Spahić, Bosnia-Herzegovina achieved their first victory in their World Cup history on June 25, 2014 by beating Iran 3-1. At the time of this last group game, however, both teams had no chance of advancing behind the teams of Argentina and Nigeria that were already qualified in their group .

In August 2014, shortly before his 34th birthday, Spahić announced his resignation from the national team. Despite this resignation, he was nominated by national coach Sušić in September 2014 for the European Championship qualifiers in Wales and against Belgium in October . Spahić accepted this nomination in consultation with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, also in order to avoid a three-game suspension in the case of Franck Ribéry by UEFA President Michel Platini in the event of a refusal. Spahić was injured in preparation for the game against Wales, so he could not participate in either game. On November 16, 2014, he finally made his comeback in the national team when his team lost 3-0 to Israel in Haifa . After there were further irritations about his future in the national team - Sušić was sacked after the defeat in Israel, Spahić again announced his resignation because of this, but was nominated for the games in Andorra and Austria in March 2015 under the new national coach Mehmed Baždarević which he was also in the starting line-up - he now continues to play for the Bosnian Association.

Controversy

On June 3, 2010, Spahic slapped the German player Marko Marin during an international match between the Bosnian national team and Germany at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt . However, this assault went unpunished.

On April 8, 2015, Spahić physically assaulted several stewards after his then club Bayer 04 Leverkusen's game in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup against FC Bayern Munich , some were injured. The DFB imposed a fine of 20,000 euros and banned Spahić for three months. In addition, proceedings for bodily harm were initiated against Spahić by the public prosecutor's office. This was stopped at the end of October 2015 in exchange for a fine of 75,000 euros, which should benefit refugee organizations, and payment of pain and suffering totaling 3,500 euros for three victims.
