The Sammy Ofer Stadium ( Hebrew אצטדיון סמי עופר, also known as Haifa International Stadium or Avi Ran Stadium ) is a football stadium in the Israeli city of Haifa . It replaces the old Kiryat Eliezer Stadium from 1955. The football clubs Maccabi Haifa and Hapoel Haifa from the Ligat ha'Al , the highest Israeli league, mainly use the sports facility.

history

The first plans for the new stadium were presented in 2007 by the British KSS Design Group, which is also responsible for the designs for the Stade Océane in Le Havre and the Falmer Stadium in Brighton & Hove Albion . The final, today's design was determined in 2009, whereby the cost should be 430 million NIS (approx. 92 million euros ). Ultimately, the total rose to 530 million NIS (around 113 million euros). The foundation stone was laid in 2009, but construction work did not start until July 2010.

The stadium on the southern outskirts of Haifa bears the name of the entrepreneur and philanthropist Sammy Ofer , who died in 2011 and who donated US $ 20 million to build the venue . The city of Haifa is raising the remaining construction costs through the sale of the Kiryat Eliezer Stadium and the state lottery. The construction project was managed by the Haifa Economic Corporation (HEC).

The new home of Maccabi and Hapoel offers 30,780 seats for spectators on its four two-story, covered stands. There are, among other things under the domed roof of the grandstand VIP - boxes and lounges ( Diamond Club , Gold Club and Silver Club ). The venue meets the requirements of FIFA and UEFA for international matches and is classified in the highest UEFA stadium category. It is the first UEFA category 4 stadium in Israel.

In addition to football matches, the Sammy Ofer Stadium will also serve as an arena for concerts . In addition, a shopping center , a multiplex cinema , restaurants and its own police station are integrated into the stadium . 1,500 parking spaces have been set up on the site. Two video display boards were installed diagonally opposite each other under the roof in two corners of the stadium. The 15-meter-high and 40-tonne World Peace Statue by the Chinese sculptor Yao Yuan has stood on the stadium grounds since 2013 .

The stadium should be ready for the opening in 2013, but this date could not be kept. In mid-June 2014, the city of Haifa announced the end of construction work on the stadium. On August 4, 2014, Hapoel celebrated the open day in the stadium. Maccabi's first training session took place in the stadium on August 14th. The stadium should be opened and used with the start of the Ligat ha'Al 2014/15 . The start of the league was postponed because of the Gaza conflict .

On August 27, 2014, Hapoel Haifa played the first game in their new home ground. In the Toto Cup Ligat Al , the home side met Hapoel Akko and won 2-0 goals in front of 3,500 spectators. The first goal in the stadium was scored by Canadian striker Tosaint Ricketts in the 13th minute. The Lithuanian midfielder Mindaugas Kalonas made the final score in the 55th minute. The stadium celebrated its premiere in the Ligat ha'Al on September 15, 2014. Maccabi Haifa defeated FC Bnei Sachnin with 4-2 goals in front of 27,200 spectators.
