history
Until 1991 see Yugoslav national football team .
The Macedonian Football Association was founded in 1949 as part of the Yugoslav Football Association. After the country became independent, he joined both UEFA and FIFA in 1994 . Macedonia played their first competitive game as part of qualifying for the European Football Championship in 1996 on September 7, 1994 at home against European champions Denmark (1-1). There was only one win in this first qualifying round, as well as a respectable 1-1 in Belgium.
The Macedonians played their best qualifying round in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup . Here they played for a long time, thanks to a 3-2 win against the Republic of Ireland , for a long time, but then lost the last three games and thus only came fourth.
The Macedonians clearly missed the European Championship 2000 , but at least they won a draw against third place in the World Cup, Croatia .
Since then, the performance of the young football nation has fluctuated considerably. Respectable appearances and points wins against teams like Turkey , Holland or England contrast with embarrassing results against football dwarfs like Azerbaijan , Liechtenstein or Andorra .
So far it has not been enough to qualify for a major tournament. So far, there has not been more than fourth place in a qualifying group.
In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Macedonia faced Belgium , Croatia , Scotland , Serbia and Wales . After two wins, one draw and four defeats, Macedonia had no chance to qualify on September 6, 2013 with three games still to go.
In qualifying for the Euro 2016 , Macedonia faced Spain , Ukraine , Slovakia and Luxembourg, and for the first time Belarus . After just 7 games, Macedonia had no chance of a successful qualification. In the end, due to the direct comparison, the last place was occupied behind Luxembourg, against which the two games ended 3-2 and 0-1.
