The Lithuanian national football team represents the Baltic state of Lithuania in football.
history
From 1923 to 1940 the Lithuanian national soccer team played international games against international teams and took part in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, where they were eliminated 9-0 against Switzerland in qualifying. 1940 Lithuania was on the Soviet Union occupied . Until 1990, Lithuanian players played in the Soviet national football team .
After regaining independence, the Lithuanian national football team played their first international match on May 27, 1990, with Arminas Narbekovas scoring the first goal for Lithuania, as in the time of the First Republic, against Estonia , which has just become independent again .
The Lithuanian national team has not yet participated in the finals of world or European championships .
The 1-1 draw against the then runner-up world champion Germany in the away game in Nuremberg on March 29, 2003 and against the then world champion Italy in the away game in Naples on September 2, 2006 represent notable successes .
A big surprise came at the beginning of the qualifying round for the 2010 World Cup when they defeated European Championship participants Romania 3-0 away.
In December 2013, Igoris Pankratjevas became the new national coach after three months as an interim coach. He will also lead the team into qualifying for the 2016 European Football Championship .
In October 2008, Lithuania achieved 37th place in the FIFA world rankings . Football is of less importance in Lithuania, the national sport is basketball , in which Lithuania is much more successful.
In qualifying for the Euro 2016 , Lithuania met England for the first time and Switzerland for the first time since 1924 . Other opponents were Estonia , Slovenia and San Marino . Lithuania could not qualify as penultimate.
