Aurelijus "Auri" Skarbalius (born May 12, 1973 in Vilnius , Lithuanian SSR ) is a former Lithuanian football player . The defender , who played 65 international matches for the Lithuanian national team between 1991 and 2005, is now working as a coach. At times he was the record national player in his home country before Andrius Skerla replaced him on June 4, 2008.
Career
Skarbalius started playing football in his home country at Banga Kaunas . In 1991 he moved to Žalgiris Vilnius . Through his assignments in the A Lyga , he made those responsible for the Lithuanian national team aware of himself and made his debut on November 15, 1991 as part of the Baltic Cup in a 4-1 victory over Estonia in the national jersey. In 1994 he moved to league rivals Inkaras Kaunas , with whom he won the national championship title in 1995. He then took part with the club in the 1995/96 UEFA Cup , where he made a positive impression on the opponent in the two first-round defeats against Brøndby IF .
Skarbalius then moved to Brøndby IF in the Superliga . At first he could not assert himself at the club and only got irregular stakes. Nevertheless, he contributed to the three championship titles between 1996 and 1998 and ran in the Champions League season 1998/99 for the club in the UEFA Champions League . In the new millennium he made the breakthrough and established himself as a regular player. In 2002 the club supporters voted him Player of the Year at Brøndby IF.
After signing the Danish national player Asbjørn Sennels in 2004, Skarbalius was mostly on the substitute bench under coach Michael Laudrup . Therefore, the club decided to loan him to Herfølge BK for 18 months from January 1st, 2005 . After the club's relegation to the second division, the loan deal was ended in the summer of 2005 and he returned to Brøndby IF. In September 2005 he made his last appearance in the national jersey in the 1-0 defeat against Bosnia-Herzegovina with his 65th international match and resigned as a record player for the national team. In December 2005 he terminated his contract with Brøndby IF to finally join Herfølge BK. There he ran as a playing assistant coach in the second division.
At Herfølge BK, Skarbalius took over the position of chief coach in November 2006. In 2009 he led the team to first place in the 1st division and thus to promotion to the super league. In the summer the club merged with Køge BK . At the newly formed HB Køge he was a coach.
In June 2011, Skarbalius and his former playing station Brøndby IF agreed to work together again, from January 1, 2012 he should return to the club as Henrik Jensen's assistant coach . When he was fired on October 24th, he already started his service as head coach at the club the following day, although he was initially only intended to be head coach until the end of the year. After his mission was successful, the club extended the contract with him and his coaching team, which included former Germany professional Bent Christensen Arensøe as an assistant, at the beginning of December by two years.
