A men's football tournament was held at the VIII Summer Olympics in Paris in 1924 .
22 nations took part in this tournament, including Uruguay, a South American country for the first time . This was the first ever intercontinental football tournament and for the first time a South American team played against a European and a North American team. Germany and Austria did not participate. The venues were the Stade Olympique de Colombes in Colombes , a suburb to the north-east of Paris, where twelve games took place, the Stade Pershing in Bois de Vincennes, at that time not yet part of Paris, the Stade Bergeyre in Paris and the Stade de Paris (today Stade Bauer) in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine north near Paris.
It was the first great moment of new football from the New World . The outstanding player was the “Black Wonder” (“La Maravilla Negra”) José Leandro Andrade . The top scorer was Pedro Petrone from Uruguay with 7 goals. For Switzerland, second place is the best result in the history of international football tournaments so far.
