Heinrich Retschury
Heinrich Retschury (born January 5, 1887 in Vienna , † June 11, 1944 ) was an Austrian football player on the position of defender . After finishing his active career, he worked as a soccer referee and functionary and twice took over the Austrian national soccer team as an interim coach.
Career
Heinrich Retschury played at Vienna during his active time and, together with Eipl, ordered the defense of the Blue-Yellows in the early years of Austrian football. As a defender, he also came to several appearances in the Austrian national team. He made his debut in the 4-0 victory over the "arch rivals" from Transleithanien on May 3, 1908. Heinrich Retschury played five more times for the team, but could not win any more. He said goodbye to the national team on June 1, 1909 after losing 8-1 to the football teacher from England . After his career as a player, Heinrich Retschury continued to work with the round leather and became a football referee and official. He soon became one of the most famous referees in the country, whistled numerous championship and cup games as well as international matches and was also used at major events such as the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris .
During the First World War , he also took over the supervision of the Austrian national team, as coach Hugo Meisl had to work at the front for the Isonzo battle . Nevertheless, he tried to support the new coach during this time. Overall, Heinrich Retschury sat from April 28, 1914 to August 1, 1919 in 23 games of the national team in the coaching bench before he was replaced by Hugo Meisl. In times of war, the enemy was only Hungary or Switzerland. After Hugo Meisl's death in 1937, he was once again coach of the Austrian national football team. Thanks to a 2-1 victory over Latvia , he was able to successfully qualify for the 1938 World Cup with the team . However, this became obsolete after the annexation of Austria by the German Reich in March 1938.
