Herbert Prohaska (born August 8, 1955 in Vienna ), called "Schneckerl" ( Viennese for his lush hair in his youth), is a former Austrian football player who was also internationally successful . After his active career, he worked as a coach for 10 years . He is currently analyzing football matches on ORF and writing columns for the Kronen Zeitung . He was elected Austria's soccer player of the 20th century in 2004, is part of the Austrian national team of the 20th century and part of the Austria team of the century . From 1993 to 1999 he was team leader of the Austrian national team, which he led to participation in the final round of the 1998 World Cup .

Career

Player career

At the age of 9, Prohaska began playing football in the club at Vorwärts XI, where his father, an unskilled worker, was a youth coach. Before that, he played with older children in the neighborhood. Prohaska started his active career as a football player in men's football in 1970 with the lower class SC Ostbahn XI , with which he was able to record a championship title in his club membership, which lasted only until 1972. After being accepted into the professional squad of FK Austria Wien (premier match in the top division already in the first round in the 2-2 home game against SSW Innsbruck on August 11, 1972 on the Sportklubplatz in Dornbach, when he was in the 29. Minute for Klaus Kelmer ) he was with the team four times Austrian champion and three times Austrian cup winner until 1980 . In 1980 he moved to Inter Milan , won the Italian Cup in the second year with the “Nerazzuri” (German black and blue ) and then transferred to AS Roma . There he won the Italian championship in the first season and Prohaska then returned to Austria Vienna. In the following three years the Viennese won the championship and in 1986 the cup. 1989 Prohaska announced his retirement as a player.

Prohaska also celebrated successes with the national team . On October 30, 1977 he shot Austria to the 1978 World Cup in Argentina with his “Spitz von İzmir ” to win 1-0 . There followed the legendary miracle of Córdoba with the 3-2 victory over Germany . He also took part in the 1982 World Cup in Spain with Austria and played in the Gijón non-aggression pact . In addition, the experienced player was used in the young team that competed in the 1990 World Cup qualification.

Coach and television career

Shortly after retiring as a player, Prohaska was already working as a coach at Austria Vienna. By 1992 he had two championship titles and two cup victories with Austria. In 1993 he became the coach of the Austrian national soccer team and in 1997 qualified as group winner for the 1998 World Cup in France . On March 27, 1999 Austria suffered a 9-0 debacle against Spain in Valencia in qualifying for the European Championship and Prohaska resigned from his position ( Otto Baric was his successor ). Despite the 0: 9, the Austrian national team reached 17th place in May 1999, the best place in the FIFA world rankings to date. From 1999 to 2000 he was again the coach of Vienna Austria.

Herbert Prohaska has been analyzing football matches on Austrian radio for several years . His goodbye after every main evening game (“Good night!”) Is one of his characteristics. After the victory of his favorite Italy in the final of the 2006 World Cup , Prohaska had his mustache , which until then had been one of his personal characteristics, shaved off in front of the cameras .

Private life

Prohaska comes from a “simple” background, his father worked as an unskilled worker, his mother was an operator. He grew up in Vienna- Simmering and reported about it in the ORF documentary “ Mein Simmering ”. Prohaska is a trained auto mechanic .
