The Lehener Stadium in Salzburg , district Lehen, was the home of the soccer club SV Austria Salzburg from 1971 to 2002 . In 2006 it was demolished and the ground was then rebuilt.
Planning and construction
Due to the rise of Austria Salzburg to the then National League called Bundesliga , began in the mid-1960s, plans to build a stadium. Lehen and Liefering were named as locations .
In September 1966 the architect Hanns Wiser created a first draft of the stadium with a capacity of 15,000 spectators and two covered stands. It was not until August 1967 that the municipal council decided that the stadium should be built in Lehen and not in Liefering. In addition, the construction program was increased to 18,000 spectators and therefore a new plan was necessary, which Wiser created together with Jakob Adlhart . Since the funds were insufficient for this in August 1969, the grandstands were shortened and seats were replaced by standing room in order to enable cheaper construction with the same capacity.
Construction of the stadium began in October 1969. The estimated cost of 16 million schillings rose to 38 million by the end of construction in 1971. During these two years Austria Salzburg played on the grounds of ASV Salzburg in Itzling .
Highlights and remodeling
The opening game on September 18, 1971 took place in front of 12,000 spectators against the Tunisian national team, Austria Salzburg won 3-2. The floodlight system was not completed until April 27, 1974, as neighbors protests against it went as far as the administrative court. For the official premiere of the floodlight system on April 27, there was a game against the Austrian national soccer team ; the game ended 1-1.
The visitor record was reached on October 20, 1976 in the second round of the UEFA Cup in the home game against FK Red Star Belgrade with 18,000 spectators.
During the winter break of the 1992/93 season, a standing room was converted into seats so that the stadium could meet the requirements for international games. This reduced the stadium's capacity to around 15,000 seats. During the renovation, the club played on the grounds of the Salzburg AK 1914 in Nonntal .
End of the stadium
The stadium became too small in the mid-1990s due to the national (1994 first championship title ) and international success of the football club; internationally it was admitted to a maximum of 5,300 spectators. In the 1993/94 season, the UEFA Cup home games were therefore played in Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium from the quarter-finals to the final . These games in Vienna were sold out with 48,000 spectators each. In order to be able to play in international competitions in Salzburg, an expansion was planned.
With a design by the architects Siegfried Schmidsberger and Peter Knall, more than 14,000 spectators would have found space in the stadium - even at international games - the cost was estimated at 80 million schillings. In May 1997, however, the planning was canceled because a completely new building, the EM stadium in Wals-Siezenheim , was preferred.
The farewell game of Austria Salzburg took place on December 4, 2002 against SK Sturm Graz in front of about 6,000 spectators, Salzburg won 2-1. "The Lehen stadium was a boon for the Salzburg sports enthusiasts and also the basis for the great successes of Salzburger Austria," said Salzburg journalist Gerhardt Bacher.
After the club moved to the EM stadium, the stadium operations were discontinued; demolition began on January 19, 2006. Instead of the soccer stadium, the district center Neue Mitte Lehen was built. This is where the Salzburg City Library , shops, apartments and a senior citizen center are located .
