Lilium iridollae is a species from the genus of lilies ( Lilium ) in the section Pseudolirium . It is only native to Florida and Alabama in the US and is very rare.

description

Lilium iridollae reaches a height of up to 200 cm. The onions are rhizome-like and often branched.

The stem is hard and straight, the leaves lanceolate, up to 15.7 cm long and up to 3.6 cm wide. They are arranged in one to five whorls of three to ten leaves.

The plant blooms from July to August with one to four pendulous, non-scented flowers in an umbel . The flowers consist of six strongly bent back petals 6.2 to 10.2 cm long ( Turk's collar shape ). There are three crown- and three sepals , but look very similar. The basic color of the flowers is yellow to orange-yellow with maroon spots. The anthers are magenta, the pollen are brown and the filaments are green. The seeds mature in seed pods that are 2.5 cm to 5 cm in size.

Spread and endangerment

The plant is very rare and can only be found in very small areas in Florida and Alabama , as its habitat is increasingly being destroyed. It is currently being examined whether to place the plants under species protection in the USA.

Lilium iridollae needs a moist soil, it thrives best in pools and wet places in coniferous forests at altitudes of up to 100 m. It is often found near pitcher plants ( Sarracenia ).

Systematics

The closest relatives of Lilium iridollae are Lilium superbum and the very rare Lilium pyrophilum .
