Karl Stotz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Stotz (born March 27, 1927 in Vienna ; † April 4, 2017 in Seefeld in Tirol ) was an Austrian football player and football coach . From 1978 to 1982 he was the team leader of the Austrian national soccer team .

Life

As a young soldier, Stotz was taken prisoner in World War II in 1944 and did not return to Vienna until the winter of 1947/1948. The defender became a regular at FC Wien soon after his return home . After just over three years with the favorites in the National League , he was poached by Vienna Austria at the beginning of 1952 . By the end of his career, Karl Stotz was Austrian champion four times with the violets in 1953, 1961, 1962 and 1963 and won the ÖFB Cup in 1960, 1962 and 1963 .

He also enjoyed great success as a defender for the national team . He made his debut as a player for FC Wien against Switzerland in March 1950 , but his highlights in the team were towards the end of his career. While he was a substitute at the 1954 World Cup , he finally made his World Cup debut in Sweden in 1958 in a 2-0 draw against the Soviet Union . Together with Heribert Trubrig , he also formed the support of the national team during the Decker era . In total, the defender played 42 times for the national team and even scored a goal. This hit from a penalty in the 89th minute in the 3-2 victory over Holland was the decisive one in Austria's World Cup qualification for Sweden.

After his active time, Karl Stotz worked for the Viennese office machine company "Tonko" before he returned in 1970 to Wiener Austria. From 1976 he was elected head coach of the combat team and immediately won the championship and, one season later, the ÖFB Cup.

Team boss

The Senekowitsch and Merkel successors (although it was assumed that the offices of the Austrian national coach and the sports director should be exercised by one and the same person) could not be resolved immediately. Karl Stotz and Günter Praschak were the most promising candidates, but instead of an appointment at the ÖFB presidium meeting on July 4, 1978, this was postponed to July 17 because of hearing these people. But things then went faster: Stotz (“in double function”) was nominated in a presidium meeting on July 10, with effect from August 1, after Praschak withdrew his application by telephone on the same day. The contract lasted until the end of the World Cup in 1982 and still required formal confirmation by the federal board.
Stotz announced improvement measures, then took office and held a press conference on August 4th. The priorities were the upcoming European championships in 1980 and then the world championships in 1982, a better recording of young talent, school football, coaching training and the public relations work of the ÖFB. After this press conference, he went on vacation that he had planned for months. And it became known that there would be new team supervisors who would be in action for the first time in the first international match (away match in the European Championship qualification in Oslo): Dr. Oswald Schwinger instead of Dr. Behawetz and - as a masseur - Georg Schreitl instead of Josef Flenner .

On August 21, he announced the 16-man roster. Then he flew to Barcelona - not only to see Krankl in the transfer match against Rapid on August 22, but also again to make sure he was cleared for the international match. (The match brought Rapids a 1-0 win.) He still had to make adjustments for the match against Norway, above all the suspension of Ernst Baumeister (he had lost 3-1 in Austria Wien in the championship game against VÖEST Linz on 25. August opponent Michael Lorenz badly fouled, but was not even given a yellow card by SR Franz Latzin) from the squad is noteworthy. Stotz himself spoke of the “beginning of a new era” with regard to the start in Oslo. The match in Oslo with the Austrians 2-0 victory was then contested without newcomers because Heribert Weber and goalkeeper Erwin Fuchsbichler had become fit.

Stotz led the team to the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Despite this success and the impeccable record of 13 wins and only 5 defeats, he was kicked out by the then ÖFB President Karl Sekanina (it was said that he had breached the contract; the official dismissal took place on December 14, 1981, after a telephone survey by President Sekanina is said to have voted for the dismissal by a majority of the ÖFB presidium; neither the ÖFB nor von Stotz gave any official reasons) and prohibited him from traveling with the team to Spain. At the beginning of March 1983 there was a settlement between the ÖFB and Stotz, who had an "amicable solution of the employment relationship as of December 31, 1981", and Stotz was to receive an appropriate severance payment. - Sekanina had believed that she could sign Ernst Happel , but this turned out to be a mistake. Therefore, the coach Felix Latzke and the ÖFB employee Georg Schmidt had to step in, under whose aegis the scandal - ridden non - aggression pact of Gijón in the game against Germany came about. At his end as ÖFB team boss, Stotz said years later: "I was so disappointed at the time that I swore to myself that I would quit football."

Others

Stotz was friends with the then Austria President Leopold Böhm and was also involved in his Schöps company. In the kidnapping case of Böhm's wife Lotte in December 1977, he played a mediator role.
