Karl Sekanina (born October 27, 1926 in Vienna , † October 27, 2008 in Amstetten ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ), trade unionist and football official.

Life

Sekanina learned the trade of toolmaker and then worked for Kapsch and Sons . He attended high school and a two-year mechanical engineering school.

He was involved in the trade union movement , from 1962 he was central secretary of the metal-mining-energy union , from 1975 to 1980 chairman of the FSG , from 1977 to 1985 chairman of the metal-mining-energy union, from 1979 one of the vice-presidents of the trade union federation .

1963/1964 he was a member of the Federal Council , from 1964 to 1983 a member of the National Council . From 1979 to 1985 he was Federal Minister for Buildings and Technology . During his term of office the continuous connection of the Süd Autobahn falls . Since it was originally built with only one lane and tighter curve radii for cost reasons, it went down in history as an economy motorway . Sekanina was also chairman of the Viennese regional health insurance fund and from 1974 to 1979 vice- chairman of the main association of social insurance institutions .

From 1976 to 1982 he was also President of the Austrian Football Association . During his tenure, the Austrian national team, under team boss Helmut Senekowitsch, qualified for the 1978 World Cup , which saw Austria beat Germany 3-2 . This was also achieved for the 1982 World Cup . However, the successful team boss Karl Stotz was dismissed by Sekanina before the World Cup, who believed that he could sign Ernst Happel as his successor, but this turned out to be a mistake. Felix Latzke and the ÖFB employee Georg Schmidt had to step in, under whose aegis it came to the scandalous 0: 1 against Germany. As ÖFB President, Sekanina managed the renovation of the then Prater Stadium and the establishment of a VIP club .

He had announced his departure some time ago, and a letter from the national team asking him to return to the presidential chair did not prevent him from making a decision. It was even rumored that he himself initiated the said letter, which he then confirmed in his decision to resign.

Criticism of the multifunctional , resignation and death

Sekanina was often criticized as a multifunctional because of his numerous offices, some of which were held in parallel . At the beginning of 1985 there were allegations that Sekanina had had a villa in Hietzing financed in return for future contracts and that she had appropriated union funds. Sekanina denied the allegations regarding the purchase of the villa. He called the withdrawals a "short-term loan ", which he paid back after a short time.

Finally, Sekanina resigned from his trade union functions on the grounds that she did not want to incriminate the SPÖ, and then on February 18, 1985, as Minister of Construction. With regard to the villa, the court could not find any criminally relevant facts. With regard to the withdrawal of funds, Sekanina was credited with the repayment as active remorse before the authorities were aware . The proceedings were discontinued at the end of 1987.

After his resignation, Sekanina largely withdrew from the public. From 1989 to 2004 he was chairman of the ASK Ybbs soccer club and then took over the honorary chairmanship . In 1999 he was appointed honorary president by the ÖFB. Most recently he devoted himself to his hobby, astronomy .

Sekanina, who last lived in Ybbs on the Danube , died after a four-week stay in hospital on his 82nd birthday in the Mostviertel State Hospital in Amstetten.
