Harald Ofner (born October 25, 1932 in Vienna ) is an Austrian lawyer and politician ( FPÖ ).

Life

Harald Ofner attended the National Political Education Institute in Traiskirchen near Vienna from 1942 to 1945 . Then he learned the profession of heavy current fitter. He attended a high school and then completed a law degree (Dr. iur. 1958). From 1965 he worked as a lawyer .

His political career began in Ofner council of Mödling . From 1976 to 1986 he was regional party leader of the FPÖ Lower Austria. From 1979–1983 and 1986–2002 he was a member of the National Council. From 1983 to 1987 Ofner was Austrian Minister of Justice in the governments of Fred Sinowatz and Franz Vranitzky .

In 2000 Ofner defended Peter Paul Rainer , who in 1997 shot the former party chairman of the South Tyrolean FPÖ offshoot " Die Freiheitlichen " Christian Waldner . Despite Ofner's efforts, Rainer was extradited to Italy shortly after his arrest in Vienna-Rudolfsheim .

In the course of the Lucona affair , the then Justice Minister Ofner made the following statement in a parliamentary debate:

"The soup is too thin."

What he meant was that there was insufficient evidence to support charges. This saying has since been used in the judicial and journalistic circles for similar cases.
