Robert Winterstein (born June 26, 1874 in Gitschin (Bohemia); † April 13, 1940 in Buchenwald concentration camp ) was an Austrian politician and minister of justice in the Austro-Fascist corporate state .

Life

After studying law at the University of Vienna , Robert Winterstein worked from 1896 to 1906 as a legal intern at the commercial court in Vienna . He then moved to the public prosecutor's office and was promoted to the first public prosecutor in 1919 . In 1921 he was given the title of Hofrat .

Initially mainly responsible for economic crimes, Winterstein switched to the General Procuratorate and was appointed General Procurator in 1932 . From 1933 he was a member of the State Council , from 1934 to 1938 as deputy chairman. In October 1935 he was after the July coup as justice minister appointed to the Government. In 1936 he left the government and again took over the management of the General Procuratorate.

In March 1938 he submitted his retirement. Although Winterstein had converted from Judaism to Catholicism as early as 1893 , he was considered a Jew under the National Socialist race laws.After the annexation of Austria by the German Reich , he was arrested on March 15, 1938 and deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp on November 10, 1938 . He was murdered there on April 13, 1940.

His brother was the officer Paul Winterstein (1876–1945).
