Josef Reither
Josef Reither (born June 26, 1880 in Langenrohr ( Lower Austria ), † April 30, 1950 in Tulln ) was an Austrian politician ( CS , VF , ÖVP ).
Life
Josef Reither was a farmer and a member of the Christian Social Party . At the age of 27 he co-founded the Raiffeisenkasse Langenrohr, in 1908 he moved into the local council and from 1912 to 1925 he was mayor of Langenrohr. First he was an official at the Lower Austrian Chamber of Agriculture in 1925 until the "Anschluss" of Austria and was again from 1945 to 1949. He was chairman of the Lower Austrian Farmers' Union from 1928. He was in the Schuschnigg I cabinet from July 29, 1934 to October 17, 1935 Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.
From February 24, 1938 until the "Anschluss" he was regional leader of the Lower Austrian Patriotic Front .
After the “Anschluss” he was sent to the Dachau concentration camp in 1938 and released there in July 1941. Since he had been named political representative in military district XVII (Vienna) by those involved on July 20, 1944 , he was arrested two days after the failed assassination attempt in Vienna. First he was taken to the Ravensbrück concentration camp and from there transferred to the Lehrter Straße cell prison. Reither survived and returned to Austria in the summer of 1945.
Before the war he was Governor of Lower Austria from 1931 to 1932 and from 1933 to 1938 . After the war he was back in 1945 and remained so until 1949. In addition, Reither held the post of chairman of the ÖVP state parliament club between 1945 and 1949.
He was an honorary member of the Catholic student association K.Ö.St.V. Aggstein St. Pölten in the MKV and K.Ö.HV Franco Bavaria Vienna in the ÖCV and member of the volunteer fire brigade .
Honors
On the occasion of his resignation from the government, Reither was awarded the Grand Cross of the Austrian Order of Merit in 1935 .
In October 2013, the Josef Reither Museum was opened in Langenrohr, and is located on the first floor of the Raiffeisen bank office in Langenrohr. The life and work of the long-time governor of Lower Austria is documented on an area of 120 square meters. In addition, a bust of Josef Reither was unveiled on the left in front of the museum.
