Siegfried Ludwig (born February 14, 1926 in Wostitz , Czechoslovakia ; † April 16, 2013 in St. Pölten , Lower Austria ) was an Austrian politician (ÖVP) who served as governor of Lower Austria from 1981 to 1992 .

Life

Siegfried Ludwig attended grammar school in Znaim in South Moravia. In 1944 he was drafted into the German armed forces. After his release from captivity, he moved to Austria in 1946 and studied law as a student trainee until 1953 . In 1954 he joined the Lower Austrian provincial service, where he was involved in staff representation and in the ÖAAB .

From 1964 to 1969 he was an ÖVP deputy in the Lower Austrian state parliament , then deputy governor until 1981 and governor of Lower Austria from 1981 to 1992. He followed Andreas Maurer . Most recently he lived in his home town of Perchtoldsdorf , where he was mayor from 1975 to 1981 and was made an honorary citizen.

His involvement in the WBO scandal at the beginning of the 1980s was never fully clarified, as the ÖVP rejected an investigative committee in the state parliament .

In his era, he initiated the state capital question . In 1986 it was decided that the city of St. Pölten would become the capital of Lower Austria. The new country house quarter was created there by 1996 , and the state government, the Lower Austrian state government and other institutions moved from Vienna to the new state capital on the Traisen .

The Marchfeld Canal was built in Ludwig's time as governor, as was the founding of today's Danube University Krems . The partial privatization of EVN was also carried out under his aegis.

He was a member of several associations of the MKV (KÖStV Aggstein St.Pölten, K.Ö.MV Nibelungia St. Pölten and others) and the ÖCV ( KÖStV Austria , KÖAV Floriana and others).

He had been the holder of the Ring of Honor of the Province of Lower Austria since 1986 and one of the few honorary citizens of the Province of Lower Austria since 1992 .

After his political career, Siegfried Ludwig was on the supervisory board of Flughafen Wien AG , in which the state of Lower Austria holds a stake, of Austrian Airlines and as chairman of the supervisory board of EVN . He was also chairman of the Alpenland housing cooperative.
