Leopold Steiner

Leopold von Steiner (born October 18, 1857 in Prague , † January 16, 1927 in Vienna ) was a carpenter, Christian-social politician and governor of Lower Austria .

Life

Leopold Steiner attended elementary school in Grinzing and then learned to be a painter. During his military service he was deployed in Bosnia . As a representative of the trade and the winegrowers he entered politics early and in 1888 was councilor of Unterdöbling. In 1891 he became a councilor in Vienna and in 1895 a member of the Reichsrat . In 1916 Steiner was raised to the nobility , left the Reichsrat in 1911 after an election defeat and held the office of city council from 1917 to 1918.

In the constituent session of the provisional provincial assembly of Lower Austria, Steiner was elected governor in 1918. However, he only held this office for a year until the Social Democratic majority elected Albert Sever as governor in 1919 . Under this he took the position of the governor's deputy until 1920.

From 1896 onwards, Steiner was entrusted with the department of welfare care and trade promotion as the Lower Austrian provincial committee and made a special contribution to the establishment of the Lower Austrian state sanatorium and nursing home for the mentally ill at the Steinhof . In memory of these services, a memorial with the inscription: The creator of the institution Leopold Steiner, member of the Upper Austrian State Committee, was dedicated to him below the institution church , 1907 .

Steiner was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph awarded and in 1931 was in the 19th district of Vienna Döbling the Leopold-Steiner-Gasse named after him.

His honorary grave is on the Grinzinger Friedhof (group 4, number 7) in Vienna.
