Johann Mayer (born February 28, 1858 in Deutsch-Wagram , † October 12, 1941 in Bockfließ ) was an Austrian miller , politician and governor of Lower Austria .

Life

Mayer was born in Deutsch-Wagram as the son of the business owner Johann Mayer. He attended elementary and trade school and learned the miller's trade. In 1886 he was elected to the 1st (executive) councilor in Groß-Engersdorf , chairman of the Wolkersdorf district road committee and a member of the Korneuburg district school council. In 1897 he was elected to the Reichsrat , of which he was a member until 1918. He was a member of the state parliament from 1890 to 1908, the deputy governor from 1918 to 1920 and the governor from 1921 to 1922. He was also one of the negotiators for the so-called “ Separation Act“, With the separation of Lower Austria and Vienna was accomplished.

Mayer had a great influence on the construction of the railway lines Gänserndorf-Mistelbach, Korneuburg-Mistelbach, Auersthal-Dobermannsdorf, Mistelbach-Hohenau, and Leopoldsdorf-Orth-Engelhartstetten and was involved in the construction of the St. Pölten-Mariazell electric railway .

He was particularly committed to the agricultural school system. The establishment of the Obersiebenbrunn, Bruck an der Leitha, Pyrha and Retz schools can be traced back to his initiative. He also initiated the state poor law, built a number of district poor houses and the Eggenburg educational institution .

He played a major role in Lower Austria's separation negotiations from Vienna.

In 1922 Mayer gradually withdrew from political life to his property in Bockfließ. His grave is in the cemetery of the market town of Bockfließ.
